What do you do to keep your cables neat and tidy? Hang them on a wall>? I dunno what to do cause I have all these cables and no where to keep them so they wont get al messed up.

Yo FLdrummer:

I have a bunch of cables too. The "spares" do present a problem once you unwind them from the packaging. But, I found a type of solution. The closet in my studio room has folding doors which I never close; so, I just loop the cables over the doors and let them hang down. For smaller cables, midi, RCA, etc., I keep them in large plastic freezer bags -- it works.

Well, maybe you can invent something even better.

Ah the old snake pit...or wires, wires everywhere wires, we've all been there. I cursed wires for years untill I discovered velcro strips, cheap, easy, quick and available almost anywhere. Coil spare cables loosely, give them a quick wrap and hang them out of the way or toss them in your spare parts drawer. The little velcro strips are also great for bundleing cords together to keep them out of the way, sort of a make-shift snake. Also the strips come in different colors for quick identification either by length or purpose. Well this works for me anyway.

Yo Pace:

Good idea with the velcro.

BYW, is there a West Flat Rock?

The current space that my studio is in is really a game room for the house. It has a small closet. So I coil the cables up neatly, drape them over a hanger, and hang them on the closet rod.

I coil them up into what would be about a 10" diameter circle; you kinda need to make sure that the connector ends stay up close to the top, but it lets you see both connectors at a glance, so you know what you're pulling out of the closet.

Oh Yeah.....

NO WIRE HANGERS!!!!!!!..................... EVER!!!!!

Hey,
What are the small thin cables that hook up all the parts of a rack called? The ones that have XLR male and female ends, but are extremely thin and you use them to hook between your pres, compressors, etc. I know they're not mic cables, even though they're extremely similar. I need to get about a dozen of them, but couldn't really find where to look for them on 8thstreet.com

Those are generally called "console" cables, although there might be other names for them as well. You could have them custom made for you, or make them yourself, but I don't think I've ever seen them for sale in a store.

I make my own behind the rack wiring with those skinny cables, and I use Canare L-2B2AT wire, with Neutrik connectors.

Thanks... I don't know how to make them myself, so I'll probably just ask my jazz teacher where he got his (since I'm sure he didn't make his himself either). I'll look for console cables on 8thstreet.

Here's about half the cables that stay here...
