Cable Making Tips Wanted! :)

Hello everyone! I'm really interested in getting started in making my own cables for my band. I have some questions if some of you guys could be ever so kind enough to answer. :)

1. What size soldering iron should I get? Would 30w do until I can later afford a Weller soldering station?
2. What cable? We have three main purposes:
1.) Mic cables (prolly 30 feet MAX)
2.) Instrument cables (20 feet MAX)
3.) Patch cables when we get our recording setup
(probably 10 feet MAX)
Is there one cable we can get that's not too expensive for the instrument and mic cables and then get a smaller cable for the patches?
3. What brand offers the best price/performance ratio?
4. What company offers the best prices?
5. Any connector reccommendations/suggestions/tips?

If you guys could help me, I'd be greatly appreciative. I'm basically just looking for general info on the subject.

Oh, and I do have a MarkerTek catalog on the way. :D
