That Norwegian Bastard
First of I`m an owner of a Mesa Bogie Nomad 45 head.
And currently i run it through a Custom made 12 Celestion closed back cab.
It sounds ok, but its starting to bug me.
Before I had a 4x10 crate cab, but it was to heavy on the bass, and to colossal for my residence "a flat". so I down sized to a 12 for less volume.

Now I have my own house, so new rules :D

I`m looking to buy a 2x12 (10) or a 4x10 (12), anybody got any recomandations (I love vintage 70`s sound).

Secondly I`ve been wanting to try my amp on a open back cab, how do you proceed, are the cabs sold as open backs or do you dismantle the back plate?

Any answers would cheer up a small stacked Norwegian :D

I have made my own open backed cabinet with 2 x 12's and the dimensions (inside) are 630 x 380 x 260 deep. It works a treat. I have Eminence Red White and Blues speakers and a Fender Dual Showman which is also the same as "The Twin" head.

Oh, and I used 20 mm ply.

i have an open-back marshall 4x12...all you have to do is unscrew the back piece of wood

i think it gives the cabinet a much smoother response...it loses some of it punch and low-end, but i also have an amp with a lot of bite/attack, so i can get away with it

have you checked out the Avatar cabinets? avatarspeakers.com. I got my first cabinet from them about 7 years ago and just keep going back to them. They make quality stuff at a very reasonable price.

If I were making anopther cab, I would buy Weber Michigans and maybe a Celestion GS10, but some of the Eminence drivers are superb also.

I prefer the 10 inch drivers cuz I dont want a lot of low end in my axe sound. You should be able to just take the back off the cab. Except for a few harmonics inside the cab, open back is open back is open back.... but I still stick some foam and movers blankets in strategic places when I record, just to kill some of the high freqs bouncing around inside the cab....

I have two mesa dc-5 heads (50 watt). I have a marshall 4x12 and a homemade 2x12 that i use more over than the marshall. I used specs from a marshall 1960 2x12 cab. The coolest thing about it is the speakers which are Jensen mod 12 (35 watt) speakers. Cheap. I took a gamble and won. Let me know if you need help wiring speakers.
