Topshelf, the mic pre on the MQ3 is a bit better than the VC3Q.
The VC3Q mic pre works just fine on a large diaphram condenser
like the C1. You should be quite happy with the MQ3 should you
choose to get one. It's small size is also handy for providing
phantom power if you play live, or are using a laptop computer,
etc. You can do a lot with this unit!

P.S. You may also want to check out the B series from Studio
Projects (street price $80), if you get curious about the
Marshall V67 compared to the C1.

I have a v67 and I'm not overly thrilled with it. It is what it is - an outstanding $100 vocal mic.

There seems to be this trend I've been noticing, though, where an awful lot of the stuff I hear and really like lately has been done with the Audio Technicas. They are good on everything.

But since Topshelf's question was originally seeking advice on strictly a vocal mic, I can see where Gidge is coming from. He is right. Were I looking for just a vocal mic, the v67 is a bit of a no-brainer at $100.

Theres a reason why AT won more grammys than any other company. That said though, it wasnt the 3035 or 4033 or 4050 that won.

i would have to agree....i would record tracks and tweak and tweak and tweak. I could never get the sound right in the mix. First time I used my meek/C-1 combo it blew me away...sounded good and didn't need tweaking.

Dilemma Resolved

For any of you wanting (or caring) to know what my decision was:
I ordered my first C1 last week, along with an RNC (package deal), and now in the hunt for a JoeMeek MQ3 .......

The feedback from you all swayed me to the C1, and I was impressed that I can pick up the phone and talk to a Hyatt (Alan's son in this case, I forget his first name), and have a decent conversation about techniques, construction, and felt the answers I got were honest. He gave me some good comparisons between the C1 and C3, which I also considered.

Thanks again to all who contribute to this forum....
Now - about those other wallet openers like monitors!

great choice TopShelf!

the RNC is at the very top of my purchase list. Thats what i need is some transparent compression....im not crazy about the compression on the d1600 for vocals. Its real good when compared to cheap compressers (better than the alexis IMO)...but... i can hear the gain reduction in the compresser. Im hoping the RNC lives up to the hype (the meek and the c-1 did)

Hello guys, I must say I agree with everything said about the Meeks, I have a VC6 myself and I´m very pleased with it, I record mostly heavy bands I must say.
But as far as I can see, the Meeks have only 3 band eqs w/ semi-parametric mids... but they rule. I´m planning to get one more meek (the VCTwinQ w/ digital outs) and the V67 (or the B1) very soon!

There is no hype to the RNC. Uncolored gain reduction at under $1,000. It is simply untouchable. A pro-quality pearl for us home-reccing swine.

Also just ordered a pair of the new sp8b MAudio ref monitors....
they had a pair set up at a music store here and they blew away everything else on the floor.

I suppose now I qualify for GAS in first degree.....

I'd get a C1, or try the Rode NT1000..I have the NT and it's great. ..but if you can, listen to both..I'd say get a mic which you can use on other things as well because you never know what you'll want to record..just having a mic that's great for vocals and nothing else, well..it's not getting your bang for the buck IMHO.
