Anyone know how to get the vocal sound of old Byrds tunes (Bells of Rhymey, Eight Miles High, Chestnut Mare). I know they double up quite a bit, but any panning, compression, reverb techniques will be much appreciated. Also I'm limited to Cool Edit Pro 2.0, Sonar 2.2, and Cubase VST plugins.

Signal chain for vocals is: MXL 2003 -> Focusrite Twin Trak -> M-Audio Firewire 410.

They had a great blend live and the unique qualities of their voices was the key to their sound. Gene had been in the New Christy Minstrels, David came from the Les Baxter Balladeers, and Jim was in the Chad Mitchell Trio. They were all great at harmony.

Jim's voice had a very unusual tone that contributed heavily to their sound, and of course, David's high tenor voice added to the Byrds signature sound as well. Live, they always sounded pretty much like the records. I don't remember them doing much doubling.

Why not email Roger/Jim at his website and ask him directly?

:) What would Harvey know about the Byrds?
(Joking)

Thanks for the info Harvey! Your insight is always invaluable. I'm a newbie on the threads but a constant hack at this home recording venture. I'll see what Roger has to say. Thanks again.
