If I want to bypass the mic pre and mixer on my 414, can I just plug my mic into my pre and my pre into the stereo channel and bus it to a track?

Would this work and if so would it produce a cleaner recording?

If so, wouldn't it be better to record EVERYTHING this way (when I'm doing it all myself)?

THanks.

You mean use a mic preamp and mixer instead of the mixer on the 414. I guess it would work, just plug the line out of your preamp into one of the stereo ins on the 414 and buss it to a track and see if it works.

I don't know if it would make the recording sound better, but you might as well try it.

Not quite.

I mean, run a mic to a mic pre to the stereo ins on the 414. I can record this to the bus and therefore bypass the 414's pre and mixer. This should technically make the recording cleaner.

I tried it and for some reason it sounded worse.

This baffles me. The less shit in the path, the less shit in the sound. So by bypassing the pre and mixer, it should have sounded cleaner.

or you could leave the input on each of the 4 channels on the 414 set to line level, and send in 4 line level signals from your preamps.
