After coming across this mixer I am seriously considering it over getting the firepod. The mixer is an Onyx 1620, it can be found here . It seems to have all I need/want for my DAW setup (of course I'll get the firewire card). I wanted a talkback mic capability (quite convenient for me to communicate with the tracking room and isolation booth), I also would like to do a rough mix before outputting to my comp (unless of course the firewire is pre EQ, Gain and all that stuff), it's just makes it easier when you have pushy clients that want to hear "what we've got so far." So the MAJOR question is...does the Onyx 1620 have good preamps comparable to the firepod? Or are these extra things I want just not worth it because the Onyx won't have as good quality as the firepod? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I've never heard the Onyx preamps but they do have a pretty good reputation. I don't think you'd lose out in comparison to the Firepod.

I don't understand what you mean when you say you "would like to do a rough mix before outputting to your computer" ? You mean just mixing the live sound to your monitors?

One difference between this mixer and the firepod is that while it outputs 18 channels down the firewire cable, it only gets 2 channels back, whereas the firepod gets all 8 channels back. This may or may not make any difference to you depending on how you plan to use it

Oh, for the rough mix, I mean when I play it back from Adobe Audition before touching the levels I'd like to have some sort of a coherent mix, as opposed to me haveing the levels maxed to peak when recording (that's what I do with my Lexicon Omega, I just get them as high as I can before they clip so when I raise the levels in the mix I don't raise any noise as well). But yeah, basically getting a good mix to the monitors.

As far as getting only 2 channels back, I don't really understand that. I don't need anychannels back, I'm gonna loop it from my comp to the mixer and out to the monitors.
Thanks for your help though.
