bypass console,go right into recorder

I've reading and talking a lot to people "who should know" about this. Unless you got a Neve or API the general idea is to go directly into your recorder with your mic's. Do not go into your console then out to your recorder then back to your recorder to monitor. I've been buying a lot of very good mic pre's (Tab/Telefunken V72a) so this is not a big deal as I can go into to the mic pre,take a 1/4 " out into the recorder and set the output gain on the mic pre as to not peak the recorder.I have not tried it yet. I'm curious if anyone has? I guess then less signal path the better but its a bit of a hassel. Comments,Thanks,Jim

It depends on what kind of recorder you're using, too.

If it's a portable hard-disk recorder ala Roland VS, etc., then most of the 1/4" inputs will have some sort of built-in preamplification. You gotta' make sure to use whatever is marked "Line In."

Then again, I highly doubt anyone with telefunken pres would be recording to a Roland VS. But if so, then a better idea would be to use a separate A/D converter, anyway, so the idea would be: preamp>converter>digital input. Got it?
 
This is the prefered way. Take the +4dbm outs on your preamps and shove 'em right into the recorder's line inputs. I do not even use a console unless I have live sound to do as well.
 
I've dumped my 4 ADAT's and am using an ALESIS HD 24/96. I do understand the whole concept and all but if I only have 6 of what I consider to be 'good' mic pre's,its tuff to even record an entire drum set let alone a whole bands bed tracks at one time!!I cant afford 24 of these V72a's at this point!! Ah!!!!!! Do you guys have any sort of a patch bay for this or just plug and unplug from the back of the recorder??
 
My rig is entirely wired to patchbays..... standard multitrack configuration....

PBs make studio life SO MUCH easier! ;)
 
Patchbays here too. I also have 22 Mic preamp channels so I don't have your limitation.
 
Oh, definately patch bays. All the line outs from my stand alone mic pre's and also the direct outputs from the channel strips off the console come up in the patch bays.
 
Ah!!!ok. I have all my rack stuff(compressors,gates etc.) in patch bays.Looks like I'll have to get more.But wait,my HD 24 has 24 1/4" inputs. I can't do anything with a patchbay without a send and a return..or am I missing something??? Maybe I have to set the patchbays up different than my other bays. They have the switches..parrallel,normal....uh....i cant remember. Hey Trackrat!! I loved the songs on your site as I told you one time before. If you dont mind, what gear was used for it? I think you have an Alesis HD 24 right?? Jim

Or, maybe not, but unless you use a portastudio you need them. Loads of them. I have an 8-track studio and have almost filled up two 48-point patchbays. :)
 
what mic pre's I got!

I list what I have in mic pre's so far...ok 2 ART PRO MPA, 1 ART PRO CHANNEL,1 UREI 1108 line amp rack into mic pre. 1 Ampex 601, 2 Altec 9470a, 2 BFE....DARN cant remember the model # they are being racked as we speak. They, Im told were exclusively made for Neumann and telefunken consoles, 2 TAB V72a waiting to be racked.

Ok, well probably not, but for me they do.... I just can't be bothered.... I wanna route something, I just bend my fat ass over the console and go ahead and do the plugging.....

But, like Bruce and some others said... patch bays are the norm..... But, I also see what the original poster is saying, and I do see how that could work.

I'm going patchbay for my inputs!!This should be easy after thinking about it. I can run 24 1/4"input of my HD 24 to the top row of a patchbay and have the bottom 24 row be 1/4" outputs of the preamps. Simply connect the track I want to record ontop to the preamp I choose on the botom row...uh.....at least I think that should work. I doing it!! Damn it I'm goin to do it!!!!"Patchbays are us" here I come!
 
Upside Down?

FWIW: "standard" practice is outputs on top, inputs on the bottom. It doesn't really matter, though, unless you want the jacks to be half-normalled. If so, the standard way is preferable, because it lets you mult one output to two inputs (which you might, possibly, want to do), while the upside-down way would let you combine two outputs to one input (which is generally a bad idea).
 
sjjohnson, when you say outputs on top you mean preamp outputs correct?? if so and I'm understanding this that seems like a very good idea.Especially the 1 output to 2 inputs That will be very handy for 2 tracking something like guitar etc. Thanks, very good thought. Hey, what IS the difference between normaled and half normaled??
