Ive been looking around on ebay trying to find a second Adat (prob used). I was wondering if there are certain things that i should be looking for or watching out for. I know low hours is a plus. Any other ideas? I just dont want to fork out cash for something that is gonna crash on me. Especially since i know how terrible alesis repair service is right now. Thats another story though. thanks

Yo' wire, wish U had been around earlier! I owned 2 XT's and 2 LX's which I sold 1 of each to help finance my purchase of the HD24. I now only own 1 of each ( I'll always luv ADAT's) and will never sell 'em.
However, Sammy's usually have low-hour demo or used models in stock. Other than checking out e-bay offers, give Sammy's a shout-out ! Prices are madd low and if you show up in person, you'll more than likely be able to negotiate their advertized price even lower! Usually priced bet 500-700 dependng on models and condition. Tell 'em "MR.Q" sent you if you show up in person(NYC location)

Good Luck!

I would not buy a used ADAT on e-bay unless you were getting an unreal price. The reason is, like a used car, you probably would want a technician to check it out BEFORE you buy. It would be a drag to buy a unit only to find out that it needs new heads or some other major overhaul.

In addition to checking the hours (which you can do by powering up while pressing a couple of buttons - the exact combination i can't remember), it would be nice to see some sort of service/maintenance record. At the very least, I would want to pop a tape in and watch the little red error light for a while to get an idea of just how well it is working.

FYI:
To check the # of tape contact hours on the headstack, press SET LOC and STOP simultaneously. To check the error rate, press SET LOC and REC 3. The error rate will be displayed in the last 4 digits of the timecode display.

I've purchased 2 used blackface ADATs off ebay over the last year. The first has been rock solid without any problems not caused by myself. The second was eating tapes and had to be repaired (new idler wheel, mode switch, and some other stuff I can't remember). All in all, though, even including the repair charges, I've only got $900 wrapped up in everything, which I think is a fair deal for 16 tracks.

If you get something that needs repair, I'd recommend finding an authorized repair center, not going through Alesis, and this was also what Alesis told me.
