I am thinking about the M-audio Delta 44 or 66. I plan on just recording vocals and maybe Acoustic guitar. I am using Home studio 4. do I need to get a Mic pre amp for this to work properly. I haven't decided on a mic yet. manual states that it is not recommended to plg a mic right into the breakout bok because of lack of voltage. is there any mics out there with phantom power? thanks

Every microphone uses a preamp. It may be integrated with the mic... like some of the new (lousy) USB mics... but every single one needs a preamp. However, not ever mic needs phantom power. Those mics are known as dynamic mics. The Shure SM57/58 are an example of such.

thanks, I am in the process of returning the Samson Q1u, it stinks. terrible delay, even when adjusting the asio driver latency and such. I am leaning toward getting the M-audio Delta 44 or 66., so I guess the key here is to get a dynamic Mic that wont need the preamp, correct? Like I said in a previous post, what I want to do is a bit of vocal and acoustic guitar recording as well as some online Karaoke and need something that will add effects to my voice in real time. I believe this card will do that. I also purchased Home studio 4 so I can take background tracks and add vocals

There are NO mics that don"t need a preamp , The all need a preamp of some sort... (USB Mics have a Built in Preamp but were not talking USB Mics)

So if you get the Delta 44/66 (I use a Delta 44) and any mic (Dynamic or Condenser) you ARE still going to need a Preamp......

You can get something like an "Audio Buddy" for under $100 which is a Cheap and useable Mic preamp....It is probably the cheapest preamp you can get that also sounds half descent......

Cheers

Or you could look at a small mixer. These have several built in preamps in case you want to record more than 1 track at a time, and phantom power. They also give you flexible routing options for monitoring & headphones etc
