i have looked at many differnt things to do with recording, and i want to use my new Toshiba laptop to do it. what kinda of software shoudl i get(its vox, 2 guitar minimum, 1 bass and drums) also, i need a mic. the only mic on the laptop is ur standard headphone plug sized hole/slot. i dont wanna spend more than 400 on the whole thing.
(on the technical side, i have 3 USB 2.0 slots, ans 1 IEE 1394, and a mic slot, but like i said, its the same size as a headphone plug, windows XP media center, a cd-r/dvd-r burner, its really fast)

Your numbers and your wishes aren't in synch. As you already have a laptop, try getting a simple USB interface, an inexpensive sequencer, and a starter kit of mics and stands, maybe 2. You can use those to learn the ropes and probably stay within your $400 budget. Do a Google search on "Musicians Friend" and do a little exploring. M-Audio and Tascam have some decent starter interfaces.

hockey guy.
ive made lots of recommendations on this bbs.
search under my name. for recording software try powertracks(48 traxcks) that i use from pgmusic.com. its superb, try the demo if you think i'm lying. talk to users on the pg forum etc ....peace
