buying a rig

Hey everybody. I have about roughly $600 dollars and i currently own the top of the line dell they make with 2.5 Ghz processor. I'm kind of a neophyte at recording on the computer but want to take some sort of system up to college with me. What soundcard should i buy, do i need a mixer (if i do i'm getting a mack 6 channel), should i get a tube preamp for the microphone tracks, and what tracking works best. I've heard vegas is real simple and good but cakewalk PA9 comes with this soundcard i was looking at. I know this question is both broad and uneducated but any help would be appreciated.

I'd suggest to read more threads and do a search in this forum. Each of your questions has been extensively answered on this board.

What are you going to record? Your choice of mixer/pre-amp/mics/scoundcard depends on what you intend to record. How many inputs do you need? How about monitors? Do you have some already? I you are more specific people can answer in more details.

I'm going to be recording acoustic based music (essentially 1 acoustic guitar, vocals, percussion, other instruments) so i only need about 3 mic pre's. I've tested a bunch of mixers and just like the sound of mackie the best (just an opinion) so i'd probably get one of their 6 channeled mixers. I don't monitors, I already have them. I hope this helps but i'll search also.

Well, how many tracks do you need to be able to record at one time, and how much are you willing to spend?

What kind of monitors?????

Your monitors are one of the most important pieces in a recording setup.
 
$600.........

You won't be able to get much.

Maybe, you can get Sonar 2.0, and a soundcard.?.?.?.?
