Hey there
I am new to this forum. But i joined because i wanted to ask people out there what i should do about my monitors.
I have Passive Tannoy Reveals, im unsure of the model number but i think there are around 6. They are passive and in the colour red so if that helps looking for model number.
But the tweeters are broke on both of them. I was just wondering, if i should spend £100 getting them both fixed or buy a new set of monitors?
I was just wondering if it's worth it to get em fixed if the monitors are not very good anyway (because i have used them yet, they were broke when i got em off a friend).
Can anyone help me out?
thanks

Did you get an amp with the monitors? If so, what's the power rating? I ask because the most common cause of blown tweeters is underpowered amp...you have to push the amp, which results in the amp distorting, which eventually results in blowing tweeters.

So if you have to fix the monitors AND get a new amp, I'd say fuck it and buy some KRK Rokit 8 powered monitors and thank me later. :D

Here is the amp i have:
Samson Audio - Servo 260

The monitors already had the tweeters blown like i said, as i got em off a friend, but i also got the amp off them too, so i dont know if it was that?
what do u reckon i should do? Are the tannoy reveal's i have any good?
thanks

I dunno' man...that amp produces 130 Watts per channel, and if your monitors are the 6P Tannoy Reveals, I think they're supposed to only handle 50. If you push them, you'll get signal burn and blow speakers (basically the opposite of what I said above) and I'll bet that's what happened. And it'll happen again if you don't replace the amp with something smaller.

So you've got a speaker that costs $125 brand new that needs a $50 repair. Actually, you've got 2 of those. And you really need to buy a different amp that's matched to your monitors.

I think it's a no-brainer, man. I'd ditch those Tannoys and get yourself a couple of Active monitors and have a warranty and assurance that the power matches the speaker. I'm not basing this on whether the Tannoy is "good" or "bad," ... I've never used them. It's just economics.

what monitors would u recommend them? I dont want to spend too much tho. As i live in the uk, i only want to spend £200 - £300 on them. Im a student atm, so this is why i made this thread, as im not sure what to do coz i havent got that much money to be honest lol

if i was to fix the monitors tho, how much would a new amp be if i couldnt afford new monitors?

Even the most basic (read: cheap) speakers/cabs usually have a capacitor in-line of the + for the horn, in an attempt to keep them from blowing. Just sayin'. Your may not have that, but I would think a "monitor" would have more than that in the crossover.

I have found that, with some searching, you can usually find replacement drivers for most anything. It is always cheaper to buy from a supplier than from the brand-name maker, too. Recently replaced a cooling fan in a Yamaha StagePas 300. Yammie wanted almost $70 for the fan, I found it locally for $12!

Something made the horns blow. If you change nothing, I would think the odds of it happening again would be high, but I'm no expert.

As far as recommendations for a low price, I'm sure these would suit your needs: Buy KRK Rokit Powered 5 Generation 2 Powered Studio Monitor (Each) | Powered Monitors | Musician's Friend

I have the KRK 8's, and I absolutely love and rely on them. You can get the 5's used for about $125 each. I haven't used the 5's or the 6's, but I can highly recommend the 8's.

They more than likely blow due to being played too loud, for 100 to get them both fixed is a cheap pair of good monitors. An amp of the power you have is fine, better to have an amp with too much power than not enough, keeps the signal clean.

^^^ What Alan says.

So long as you are sensible, you should have no problems with that amp and speakers. Your ears will tell you if you're driving the speakers into the danger zone of distortion. Chances are that the person you bought them off didn't do this.

Ok thanks for all your help guys
i decided to get the monitors fixed, as i emailed Tannoy to see how much tweeters were, and they are near enough £50 for the two with post and package, so i didn't think this was too bad. So i ordered these, but i just wanted to ask... what amp would u recommend me getting? as i am using the amp i got with the monitors for something else now.

.

chris .... he has said twice HE didn't blow the tweeters ....... so it wasn't that amp that blew them and so it can't happen again because it never happened in the first place.
As for the speakers ..... I know nothing about them. But you can change those things yourself ..... probably cost 50 bucks for both of them.
EDIT: oh, I see I was right about the price.
That amp'll be fine ..... you don't need to change it. Just use some common sense and don't crank it wide open.

tweeters are about $40 each....$80 ...
Replacement Speakers Poly Dome Tweeter T-145

maybe you can put in off brands that will work for cheaper.

(and you hope the capacitor/filter is ok.....)

I think Chris is right an underpowered amp was probably cranked up and blew both tweeters in the past....

1) first ensure the amp is working ok, with good speakers from somewhere...take your amp to Guitar Center or Best Buy and plug them in....about 1hr time wasted.

2a) then decide on repairing the tweeters. (and maybe capacitors)
2b) surf around and find some PAssives without blown tweeters.....I found some KRK st6 for under $100 this week in CL....for example...

if money isnt an issue get some actives..... I see them on CL all the time about half off. Some KRK RP6 this morning for $180 a pair....

Don't do it, use the original tweeters, the speakers have been designed to be accurate monitoring with these components.

Alan.

I've got a pair of those older red Reveal passives, and I would consider them worth fixing.

If you weren't overseas, I'd consider buying them from you.

Thats a decent price for OEM.

As for amps.... how much money do you have?

I think one of the best amps I've ever owned, around $200, was a NAD forget the id.. ADCOM makes some nice ones, imo.
Just watched a video of major-professional, Chirs LordAlge, he uses a $200 old school Yamaha for his monitor amp...
