Buy a guitar amp plugin or get adapter and use free ones?

Hi,

I'm new here, so please feel free to let me know if this post should go elsewhere.

I have been recording guitar parts using a Pod XT, but I would like to be able to record a raw signal and reamp it instead. I have Amplitube LE, since it came with my Mbox II, but it is quite limited (hence the "LE" in the name). I also have a limited budget with respect to purchasing an amplifier plugin. My main DAW is Pro Tools. My question for y'all is this: In your opinion, would I get more value by buying FXExpansion's VST to RTAS wrapper and using free amplifiers plugins (such as Freeamp), or by purchasing an RTAS-capable plugin (such as Amplitube Fender, or Guitar Rig, etc).

And, in case you're wondering, I am trying to get good clean and somewhat edgey tones, and am not looking for any high-gain metal types of sounds.

with the pod xt pro you can record both the clean unprocessed and the processesed guitar sounds you may be able to do this with your pod xt my manual covers both and its in there so maybe both pods can do it.
 
I have a Pod GX and it records the raw guitar track. Maybe it's something in ProTools that needs to be set.
 
I use the full version of Amplitube 3 and get some really great sounds out of it. I think itcost me in the neighborhood of $400 but your options are endless which makes it worth the price tag in my book and unlike a lot of modeling software, it doesn't sound modeled.

Sounds like one vote each way, any more opinions out there?

Sound like floorpuncher would recommend Amplitube 3 (which would work in Pro Tools as an RTAS plugin) but mikemorgan likes Acme Bar Gig (which, from their web site, looks like free VST plugins, so I would need to buy the RTAS to VST adapter to make it work in Pro Tools).

A split decision so far. Any other opinions? Have people had good experiences with Freeamp (a free one) or any of the other free VST plugins? Or are there other commercial amp simulators that people really like?
 
Recording unprocessed sound

BTW, in response to axeman_ukl and dastrick, thanks for the input, but I'm not having any trouble recording the unprocessed sound. I'm just trying to figure out a good, affordable way to reamp the guitar tracks after recording them.

There is apparently a Line 6 product that will let me use the sounds in my Pod XT Live as a plugin, but I'm not in love with the Pod XT sounds, and this product would apparently require me to have my Pod XT hooked to the computer as a sort of dongle every time I use the plugin, which seems like a pain. So I'm disinclined to go that route.

btw i have a pod and a v-amp....and they just seem to lie there unused...Id recommend software (if not a real amp) as then you can always tweak it...Id always record with the other two then hate the tone later :(
