burning issue

heres the deal, my p.c. isn't anywhere in my recording chain, and i want to burn master c.d.'s.....so do i fork out for a decent sound card and a good burner, or go for a standalone unit like the tascam cdrw700 or the cdrw4u? quality wise, which is the better option? is it worth going for the stand alone to keep the p.c. out of my recording chain (i hate using the p.c. for music)? any opinions at all??

I've had both and I prefer the PC route. It's just so much easier when it comes to editing.

The PC will probably be "easier" and more flexible, but if reliability is an issue for you you might want to skip that headache and get a digital HD recorder or other "stand alone" alternative that doesn't run Winblows or CrapOS.

Howdy Dr. C.
It has been my expierence that even the best sound cards suck for recording. I prefer to use my tas cdrw5000 to digitize the music the rip the tracks in to the computer for editing. After the editing I burn a CD in the computer. Then I use another deck to check it. I try to never use the sound card to record anything. Although I am guilty of listening with them.

I agree with Grizz. I've used both the Tascam and HHB stand alone CD recorders and a series of HD-R's as well and they all have a cleaner sound than recording through a soundcard. I'm fairly new to computer editing but the rip, edit then burn approach looks best to me.
