So... I feel badly about this, but I've been producing music lately and not putting it up here. This place is where I learned how to track and mix drums properly, and basically got stellar advice from people all over the world for the span of a few years.

So, to make up for this heinous crime, I went through music that I've produced, and found the craziest piece I could find (musically), and decided to share it. It's called "Burn in the Sun" - by Tiny Boats.

I tracked, edited, mixed, and mastered the whole thing, as well as performed drums, piano, organ, bass, and sang backup vocals, too.

I'd really like some feedback for this one.

Burn in the Sun

Thank you!

Great work PoeticIntensity,

My comments are pretty minor and more to do with taste. I feel the mix is right for the grand melodrama rock sound in the 2nd half, but a bit too big and processed for the more intimate first half. Listening with headphones I find the panning of the drums a bit radical, especially a boom I keep hearing in my left ear, but perhaps I am just conditioned not to pan the lower frequencies so much :)

Thank you for your comments, Tobe. Yeah, that boom you hear in that song is the result of us stomping on a piece of plywood, and that's the way it came out.... I guess I could have panned it, but I thought that leaving it in its original state would be unique. I considered panning it to the middle at least a dozen times, but every time I did, it didn't sound quite as authentic.

Thanks again for the listen, and critique!

Pretty intense track. For some reason I was expecting more impact when the second part of the arrangement kicks in. I think the master is too leveled, let the listener turn up to hear the beginning and get hit when the second half comes in. (would be my idea)

Anyway, nice job, like the vocals and big production, great drumming.

Pete

Yeah, I'd be inclined to agree with that. Get a bit more build with the first part.

When the tempo picks up in the rock part, I might go for a sparser mix too. That would help emphasize the tempo change.

You've got a lot of cool stuff going on here and a really interesting mix and arrangement. My main overall critique would just be that there isn't enough dynamic contrast between the sections.

Nice - personally , (& this is a THING with me at present), I'd be more aggressive with the esses.
I like the dynamics suggestion from Tobe & VHS - but I'm a sucker for a slow build & thump.

Thanks for the listen, Pete! Ya know, I used that trick in track 3 of the album ( Tiny Boats ), and had I had enough time with Burn in the Sun, I definitely would have done that, but I didn't even think of it. Great idea, though. Burn in the Sun was almost an afterthought on the album, as it was produced last, and well after the album was due to be released.... Ah well. Thanks for listening and commenting!

Thank you, Steve! Sparser mix toward the end was the idea, for sure. I've got the reverb all but gone on the drums during that part, but I didn't think to take any of the instruments out. I think at that point, it's only guitars, drums, bass, organ, and vocals. Maybe take out the organ? Anyway, thanks, bud.

Ray! Thanks for the listen, man. too much essessess, eh'? Hmm... I'll take another listen and see what I come up with. Thank you!

I heard this the other night when I had a quick browse around and now I'm back for another listen. I really liked it the first time I listened. I still do now.

I agree with VHS with regards to the sparser mix for the ending part. I think not so fuzzy/tighter guitars for that part would really make it stand out. Having said that, it sounds really f'in good as it is.

Top job :thumbs up:

Its overall certainly an impressively peice of work for a solo effort. Things that strike me as issues:

Overprocessed..Too much compression.. its not "pumping" or anything, its just dynamically very flat.
Seem to be a massive overall low-midscoop (maybe around 500), which creates an overall gloss but the body of the sound is gone. This is especially noticeable at lower volumes. Sounds to me like nice bottom end tho. Perhaps a little sparkly up top.
Is there autotune going on there with the background vox or faux doubling?
The last section doesnt rock as much as it could because of the lack of dynamics. all these problems really seem to come down to what sounds like it being over processed (and in the wrong way) in mastering.

Anyway like i was saying its an impressive effort for a solo project, better than i could do. Just wanted to let you know what stood out to me, so next time its even better!

Sounds good as is to me. I would say it's almost perfect. Sounds like something you would hear on the rock radio station, which I refuse to listen to, but not knocking it ;)

You sound like you know what you're doing and have a very good reason for every weird little thing, so I hesitate to comment.

Maybe I shouldn't, but I listen to these songs trying to decide how long I would leave them on if I turned on the radio and there they were. I'm sorry to say, most of them (this one included) sound like they would make a great last-song on an album after all the singles and hits have gotten out of the way and we're trying to wind things down.

The song is very professionally made, however, and is very good at what it does. Not every song needs to be a single.

JJ.

Thank you, Mr. Clean! I sure do like a really nice-tight guitar sound.. Maybe I'll revisit the end of the guitars in this one...

It's replies like this that give me faith in people. Thanks for your direct comments, Hegs. I did compress it a bit much, now that I've listened to it so much.... The beginning didn't need as much at all, and doing so made the latter-part not pop as much as it could. 500HZ scoop - good ears, but it's not in the mastering, it's just in the guitars and drums... Probably around 4-5db at 600HZ.

Thanks again, man!

Really great sounding song and mix! Sounds really full and professional! Guitars sound really good. Nothing I would change!

Thanks for the comment and listen!

Thanks for your words, Joe. Being compared to songs on the radio puts me in the ballpark of where I want to be, so thank you for that (even if ya wouldn't listen to the whole thing...) No worries, man.

Thanks again!

Nice intro...balanced, great vocals, strings and guitar...is that a pad in there?

I like the stomp :)

Second half rocks...nice performance and everything sounds good to me. Dunno why it reminds me of someone like The Alarm or something...its commercial but not cheesy...not too anthemic

Would not sound out of place on my radio...mix sounds great to me, pro level. Nice work J.

Thanks, man! Glad ya liked it. Also, I didn't realize you had released an album! What's the best way to buy it? CDBaby?

Yeah if you want the physical CD...actually its the cheapest download too I think

Its all stuff older than a year though...near two years now
