I have a Fender Bassman 400 bass amp. It has a built in Compressor. Does anyone know if this would be sufficient enough compression? It doesn't have attack/release/limiter functions, but it does make a difference when I listen to it through a mixer. Also, is the compression any good, or is it just a bell/whistle Fender threw on there.....

Thanks

I always prefer to track dry and compress later. You have more control that way, you're not stuck with it.
Built-in compressors shound great live but I personally don't like the sound when recorded. YMMV

kjmcpo,

Sufficient for what purposes?

My experience with most built in compressors on bass amps is that they are really LIMITERS only for speaker and amp/electronics protection. They still call it a compressor because you can't sell and amp to any teenagers or 20 somethings with the word LIMITED or LIMITER any where on the amp or the advertising.

Calling it a compressor makes it more marketable but without tweakable settings it is a one trick pony to protect the equipent from arriving in the shop for expensive warranty work.

On the other hand if you are getting the sound you want live don't worry about the compression thing. Use your ears. If you are not getting what you want then start looking into wether you need to change/improve technique or look at other equipment.

Thanks.....

yea, that's what I figured. I'm doing some basic 8 track recording right now, and it seems to be sufficient. Not exactly what I want, but doing it somewhat. As soon as I get the $ I'll get a real compressor.

Thank you guys for your input....
