hey everyone, a few days ago i went and bought a studio. Before you go "tsk tsk tsk what a waste of money" realize that this is my first attempt, i HAVE read quite a bit, and i already know how to use everything i have so it worked out.

Behringer Di-100
Behringer UB2222
Shure SM-57
Nady sm-250a monitors
M-audio Delta-44

and some cables etc.

I am pretty pumped, i still have 300 $ left over and dont know what to get. Some suggestions? can someone tell me why i could need a compressor? (ill be recording guitar mostly)

thanks

Congratulations!

A compressor is not a pressing need. You have them in your software. Learn to use those, and just make sure you don't clip the signal on the input to the 44.

Well, you need headphones for tracking, pick some that you like. I use Sony.

That leaves around $200. I presume you intend on expanding quite a bit since that console is pretty big for just one guitar. That will mean more microphones. Probably right now you shouldn't spend that, you should take a few months & play around with what you've got. By then you'll know what else you want.

thanks! i totally forgot about headphones. I ll definanetly get some of those. I also need a stand....

Pretty soon ill be getting another 400-600. (the way they pay me is messed up, so iam not sure how many hourse ive worked for this paycheck). So ill have some throwing around money, maybe another guitar :p

i dont wanna buy drums unless they are electronic. Maybe i should buy some semi decent ones and learn how to play on them. Even though its midi, its not loud which is perfect for me. and i wont need to mic them, hehehehe.

Congradulations!!! Are you only recording guitar? You'll definately need a decent vocal mic if you're going to do some serious vocals, but for now the sm 57 should work good. What kind of guitrar set up do you have?

I have a godin LG signature into an electroharmonix graphic fuzz, and then into a peavey classic 30 with a danelectro de-1 delay in the effects loup. I also have a fender tc-90 ( a new model, probably looking at selling it becasuei wanna buy a set of electronic drums {yes i know that will defeat the purpose of having an 8XLR track mixer for home use}), a fender 12 string acoustic, some other acoustics that are shit, a crate gx212 shit amp, and a yamaha rbx270-fretless.

i am really pumped about this studio. so far for the things i need some more of is to make some soundproofing (i have some plans already) and to buy :

some microophones (shure sm-58?)
mic stand
headphones (sennheisser?? sony??)
new speaker (celestion)
new tubes (JJ)

yay i get to set my troom up and organize everything tonight. Such a good part of having all this stuff! :D

Most important thing at this point is definitely treating your room acoustically. You don't mean "soundproofing" (not with that budget), but you will definitely need some absorption/diffusion in the room or your mix will sound like crap. My rule of thumb is to spend as much on treating the room as you do on monitors ($200 in this case). DON'T FORGET THIS STEP! All the gear you have is worthless if you can't get a good mix.
