Hello all, I very much appreciate any and all feedback... I'm not looking just for someone to justify what I've already decided, though I've got some constraints (mostly financial) - as we all do, I would guess.
We're building a new house using one of the builder's standard homes, but there is still some flexibility to modify the blueprints as long as codes/inspections/etc. are not violated. The overall studio size is currently 22 ft 3 1/2" X 16 ft 7in with a 9 ft ceiling". I'm attaching a PDF that is drawn as accurately as I can.
What I would like is a really good (or reasonably good) space in which to mix and master. I would also like a good vocal practice space, to be able to track some great vocals, and track selected acoustic or direct instruments. But I wouldn't attempt to track an acoustic drum kit or rock band. For some things, time with a pro and an already tuned kit in a commercial studio seems a better value with better results. That's my current theory anyway.
Other theories to be squashed if necessary - I don't think I'd want a completely dead room with broadband absorption everywhere. I definitely would like suggestions on an appropriate amount and placement of bass traps, but I think having a little accoustic ambience is fun - that I'll get better, more confident performances if it feels like this is a great place to capture a great sound.
I'm thinking about having primarily carpet with section of wood floor to create some flexibililty for tracking, but that's pure speculation on my part as to how well it would work, or if it would just screw up any mixing. Notice also the Mic closet at the front that causes the room not to be symmetical/rectilinear. Not perfect but okay? Really Bad?
Thank you for your time. Respectfully,
Greg
