RAM speed

When I add a second 512 chip will I be able to use the dual speed? How do I set up the memory to a fast speed? With this much RAM will I be able to run approx. 30-40 tracks with plug-ins smoothly?

You'll be fine with 512 MB as long as you do regular maintainence and don't allow too much junk to load on boot up. I've done some pretty elaborite stuff with Acid, and I only run 512 MB, but I'm pretty aggressive about keeping my startup files/reg run free of junk, and run anti spyware apps like adaware and spybot all the time. When you go to 1 GB, just get another of the same module, and then you have to intsall them in certain slots to get the dual channel. The mainboard manual will explain which slots.

startup

Thanks for the advice. As far as keeping things clean I should be fine. This machine will never be connected to the internet so popups and other junk should not be an issue luckily. I do need to watch when I install programs though that they don't automatically startup in the background.

built it

So I built it last night. It was 8 hours of hell but I could do it again in 2 hours. Funny huh. I had some grounding issues with the case but solved that with tape over the contact holes and paper washers. I only have four screws holding the motherboard on right now so I have to go to the radio shack and get some more paper washers. My question is what programs can I put on it to test 1. speed 2. reliability 3. all things are functioning properly. I want to make sure I get everything correct in the stock setup before I attempt to overclock.

Also how do I get the start menu on XP pro to stop materializing and just appear?

You could download PC mark 2001 and memtest 86. Two apps that give the computer a workout. Mem test makes a boot fisk you run to test the memory. As far as the CPU leave it at stock speed and check the bios for the CPU temp. Should easily be under 115 F idle. If so then you should be able to can crank everything up...
If you are having issues with mounting the mainboard, I'd go back and look very carefully at how it's mounted. You don't really need paper washers. If I have enough to use one for every mount I do, otherwise I leave them off. Doesn't really matter. Could be an extra mount somewhere that's not needed or the board isn't lined up.
