hello,
Well im thinking of building a recording booth. I went to Homedepot and saw this 10'x14'x7' outdoor storage shed. and thought, why not.

Now i want to make it sound proof so not to disturb everyone else. I looked up some information on sound proofing and they said unless you have the money its super hard to make it completly sound proof and will still hear bass and stuff. thats fine. it also said basic soundproof is make it air tight.

So I was thinking since it is a metal shed with many gaps I would cover the inside with plywood and seal it. and i was thinking maybe putting foam between the shed and wood.

BUT im on a budget, so i was wondering whats a good way to soundproof this shed on a budget?

The sound blocked by a sheetmetal shed from home depot is probably negligible. You need mass, plywood isn't enough. A room in your house would be FAR better, think about it - you have drywall, insulation, framework, sheathing, siding, etc - and we all know even that isn't sufficient for loud drums, guitar amps etc. If you don't make soundproofing a top priority, and put some $ behind it, you'll probably be disappointed with the result. All the research I did indicated there's NO cheap easy way to soundproof anything.

I was toying around with a similar idea a year or 2 ago. My plan was to pour a concrete slab and build cinderblock walls, filling the brick holes with sand - the cheapest mass I could think of. Plus the slab, plus a roof, plus a door, bottom line would be around $1000-$1500 for the structure. Then you'd have to treat the interior walls, add electrical and hvac, it just ended up being too much of a project, esp. since I had no idea exactly how well it would contain sound.

As long as I'm posting again, HOW soundproofed do you need, and what are you soundproofing from? Are you trying to keep it quiet on the outside so you can be loud? Who's around, how far away are they, how tolerant are they? Or are you more interested in keeping the outside noise out so you can record?

Build a cinder-block shed around it. Seriously. A sheet metal shed is going to block almost nothing - no matter how tightly it's built. It's a giant, thin diaphragm.

By the time you'd be done with it - and the thousands of dollars just in pouring the foundation, framing the entire interior, modifying it for solid doors, running electrical, etc...

Add two layers of 1/2" drywall to an interior room instead.

Mostly to keep quite on the outside. I mostly work during days so record late at night. and if its loud when your trying to sleep i think anyone would get mad. haha

So if i need mass, what if I use real thick wood (4") with foam sandwitched between?

My house doesnt really have small rooms. and the small rooms are to small, like closets.

I guess i might just make a one person booth, since i have all music made on Fruity and i just record vocals.

I"m building a studio shed this summer...but i'm leaving mines outside...next to the house...don't get the metal shed...it's to thin and will cause a echo...get a wooden shed so this way you can insulate it...and add another wall to make it even thicker...buy some studio foam...and cover the whole inside...you'll be good...that's what i'm doing...or and seal all the edges so no bugs get it...
