Using the AMD 64 bit processor and ASUS motherboard, what other components would be reccomended?

I'd like to keep costs between $500-700.

This is tough not knowing exactly what your expectations are and will you out grow a base set up in short order but, if I was starting out I would make sure that what ever I invested could grow as your needs increase. If it were me, I'd add to your list a couple of fast and quiet hard-drives, RAM and most importantly a sound card designed for the purpose. :D

I put this list together for a user as an example of where the component costs are and where you might be able to save money. Hope it helps.

Building a computer yourself really isn't all that difficult.

You could probably make the same thing mynameisscott wants for about 500 less, if you build it yourself.

I myself made a recent investment because I realized I was bringing more and more projects home from the studio. But if all you have is 700 to spend, I'll tell you right now, you're going to get stuck in some places.

To stay on track:

1) A good portion of registered memory (1gb works well)
2) SATA aka Serial ATA hard drive (80 gb should work well)
3) Power supply 400-450watts

Others to keep in mind:

Prosumer sound card (within your budget)
Quiet case
Heatsink for your CPU

Here's an example of my recent DAW to give you an example of what I mean:

2 AMD MP CPUs at 1.8 gigs each
2 Sticks of 1gb Samsung registered memory
2 200 gig IDE Harddrives
A skyhawk quiet case (Rackmountable)
2 Thermaltake volcano heaksinks for the CPUs
Nvidia graphics card
Pro tools HD 3 accel sound card (ignore this one)

Minus the sound card I have, this set up would cost you around $1300-$1500. However, with the soundcard, add another $14000 dollars (yes, you read it right)

pricewatch.com is a good site for parts.

if i could save money by building the computer from scratch i would , is it hard , i mean i dont want to make a mistake and it breaks or wont work or something. and i'm in the uk so the price of that computer in the link plus shipping will be expensive so i'm all for building it myself if i can.

I want to thank everyone for the input. A good deal came up on a Powermac computer so I went with that instead.

Thanks again.

Yup...once they go to the dark side, they almost never come back.

Thats why pc guys like that must use the force to bring them back!

i know this is out of you price range but i think this looks pretty good , i'm thinking of getting it:
http://www.adkproaudio.com/systems/viewsystem.cfm?recordid=61

From ADK:
A64 3000+
1gig RAM
80+250 HD's
9600XT
Rackmount
Echo Mia
Antec 430w PS

$2000

From Monarch Computers:

A64 939 pin 3500+
1gig RAM
160+250 HD's
9600XT
Tower
Enermax Whisper 460
Echo Mia
3 year onsite warranty

$1940

Monarch comes highly recommended by quite a few people, as well as major magazines. An Enermax whisper will be just as quiet as the Antec would be, and a Zalman cpu cooler is easily added. The 3500+ not only will stomp the 3000+ (dual channel DDR) but is also expandable further than the 3000+ is.
