If you know how to solder and are handy in drilling, it's probably quite easy to assemble a kit.

If you don't I wouldn't start with a $400 kit. You might burn up something expensive.

I have looked at that preamp for some time but could not justify the price. If their site would put up some A/B mp3s so you could hear the thing it might be easier to make the jump.

For this price you could get 3 of the VTB1s at the new lower price or one RNP and both of these come with a warranty.

Anyone heard one these?

another thing I'll point out is that at that price $600 for kit, over $100 for power supply and then whatever the chassis costs, it would make more sense to buy a 2 channel Vintech 1272 for $1200

Hello guys, thanks for your interest in the N72 kits. They may be expensive for kits, but they include very high quality components like Carnhill transformers, Panasonic FC electrolytic caps, gold-plated toggle switches, Neutrik XLRs, Bourns pots, and a double-sided, plated-through, glass-epoxy PCB. The N72 is by no means a toy, and they're being used by an ever-growing number of home and professional recordists with great results.

I just wanted to clarify the kit pricing. The 172K is a single-channel kit which contains *everything* you need to build a complete preamp (except for solder and hookup wire), including the chassis and power supply, for $599. Additional channels are available for $349. All the kits are also available built-to-order for additional cost. An assembled two-channel unit is $999, for example.

All the "complete" kits come with the same 2RU chassis and power supply, which can accommodate as many as 8 channels.

The $600 complete kit includes power supply and chassis. The two channel complete kit is $800. You can buy a complete 2-channel preamp, assembled, for $1000, so it's $200 less than the Vintech.

Then of course, comes the matter of quality, fo which I know nothing. :)
