I'm going to be recording acoustic guitar , cymbals and some clean electric out of the nt5 pairs and the audio technica at2031 pair . So out of your experience or just knowledge which would you say is better ? I'm looking for a nice acoustic sound like Boyce avenues acoustic guitars which is most suited ? Also which ones do you perfer personally ?

Thank you

If it were I - I would go for the Rodes nt5 for the one major fact that you can change the capsule out for an omni (much like an Oktava MK-012, Which I would highly recommend. Read about them HERE)
I have seven of the Oktava MK-012 ☼ Two of which are the fake Chinese knock offs which still sound good, two fully modded, two factory from the factory unmodded, and an unmodded single.
These are great low coast microphones that can be found all day long used on ebay, at or below half price of a new one.

Other personal recommendations wound be the Shure KSM series 137 and the 141 models. But they are more expensive.

Thanks for that information it was very useful I was t aware that the nt5 had switchable capsules ! How would you describe the sound of it because I've heard that they can be quite dark ?

Yes and no .... all depends on the situation and the room you record in.

Without hesitation I would be looking at the Oktava microphones ;)

I believe the MXL 603 also has capsules and is in another world after a trip to Michael Joly.

Sadly my budget won't let me stretch that far :( but would you say the nt5 is a good option ?

My budget is exceeded by the oktava not the mxl but how does the mxl sound ? Compared to the nt5 and audio technica

Yes ... but as I said the Oktava's can be found on ebay used at really great deals.

They will work but you may find yourself wanting an upgrade in no time.

Ok thanks for this I'll look for some used oktavas but If I can't catch any good deals on them would you suggest the nt5 or the mxl 603 ?

Thanks for the help ! I will look for good deals on the oktavas but if I cannot see any good deals would you recommend nt5 or the mxl 603 ?

I'm an sm81 fan. There's a pair in the free adds at the minute IIRC.
Oktava 012s are lovely too!

My budget is £260 not a lot but I'm just seeing what I can get with it

That's not too bad.
I think I got my 81s for about £300 and I know the nt5s aren't too dear.
Shop around. :)

Do you mind buying used?
