It's a 24 bit burner, and has digital gain for quieter recordings... to bring them up to "level" with your other recorded material.
You want to keep everything at 24 bits as much as possible, because once you have the songs mastered and duplicated, they will be dithered down to 16 bits.
I think you can get the Tascam CD-RW700 for something like $550.00 if you hunt around or get a deal from the same place you bought the Akai.

The CDRW700 doesn't have SCSI port, drdrew, but it does have both s/pdif (digital coax) AND digital-optical ins and outs. The DPS-16 has s/pdif ins/outs, so it'll mate just fine.
Of course, the CDRW5000 is even better if you have that kind of money to spend. I wasn't sure what your budget was and tryed to give you the best bang for your buck.
