I read the thread 'Best Distortion Pedals' but it seems to be dealing with obtaining that weak, slightly overdriven sound. Thats all fine and good, but I need distortion that is HEAVY, like Slipknot, or uhh...maybe the Deftones. What pedals do you recommend for this type of application? I've heard good things about the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone. What others are out there for us metalheads.

to get that awsome distortion you should by a mesa boogie rectifier of some sort or big muff is good, the original pro co rats are supposed to be nice.

Whatever you might read about pedals... you ain't gonna get any true balls in a guitar rig unless running a kick ass head/cab. Forget trying to get your sounds out of shitty little box. If you don't like the sound of your amp... get an amp that'll do the job without having to use a pedal.

Z Vex Fuzz Factory.

I know its a fuzz, it is brutal and with a tube amp will feedback at very low volumes. Forget the sound files on tone frenzy,
go to zvex.com and find a dealer. Try one.

PS I use a small amp wound up for overdrive.

Dig around on ebay for a digitech 21 legend(no rp's, they look better, sound like annoying fuzz) make sure it comes with the pedal board, set up right ,it kicks ass. it's old but was top of the line in its day.should cost around $200

I agree with Cooperman, you can piss around with pedals all you want, but if you want a decent guitar sound go out a buy a good amp. Get a Fender, Marshall or Boogie with tubes in it man!

I gotta go with Cooperman, too (even tho' he is an Aussie!)

You can't race in a Formula One race with a Ford Taurus with big tires.

For the mega-distortion you're looking for you've got to have a serious amp.

Marshall is the premier choice for the style you are interested in (although I wouldn't use one and think Boogies are far better)

As always, $$$$ is gonna be a problem, but save up - it's the only way you're gonna be happy.

If you want a very credible balls-to-the-wall overdrive, the Boss Metal Zone is probably your ticket. Just try it out at your local music store. You can probably get one used (maybe ebay) for under $100. Not all of us can afford a range of guitar amps...

I say go with a processor, its more flexible, costs less, replaceable. remember an amp is just a speaker cabinet (I may go to hell for this) with a processor built in. if it blows out your out of buisness. you can plug a processor into almost any powered speaker and get good results, you should get a good amp when/if you have the $$$. but you should build a rack first, then find a complimenting amp.

another thing to think about is the guitar itself, you can't make a pigeon sing no matter how good you mike it!

i use a metal zone mt-2 through my fender musicmaster amp, with an alesis microeq (parametric) in between to really pull up that bottom end and dull out those supericepick highs. these two devices sound monstrous on my crate (not a word, it was free!) tube amp as well. the sound i have right now is rather like static-x or system of a down, and i swear adding that eq makes it mute more easily (must be the chop on the hiss freqs i use). i use an explorer as my axe and i daresay that no stock marshall could hold a candle to it in terms of sheer brutality. you've got to have a reasonable amp, though. my musicmaster was cheap, and it works great. i've also found that the mesa boogie twinax (is that the tube pedal) sounds huge, but may not have as much distortion as you want. i think mesa boogies may be more ballsy-they have a growl that is incredible-but i'll take the sounds i can put down on a recording head to head against any heavy band any time. with a few tweaks, i can sound like tool, sepultura, slayer, etc. mostly i just stick with the nice bass-heavy metallica-with-more-balls type sound. out of all the pedals i've used, only the metal zone really delivered the amount of crunch i wanted. that parametric mid works wonders, but with the alesis eq, it's phenomenal.

this might sound wild but have you tried removing one of the output valves on your amp??? It used to work on leslies to get that emerson lake and palmer grungey organ sound!!!

Here's the word on removing tubes from yer Recto from the guy I talked to at Mesa Hollywood:

They should only be removed in pairs (from dual and triples only). Also, remove the outside pair first and for each pair you remove, remove one rectifier tube (the big 5U4G; doesn't matter which one).

For really nasty distortion though, I keep a JCM 800 around. I dunno if they're all like this, but my 800 doesn't get it's drive from a tube. It actually overdrives an LED!! That's right, it has a light emitting diode with current running through it hooked up to the gain control!!! Really raw!!

Brutal Distortion!!!
Hi from down here...
If you are looking for really cool distortion, (and can´t afford Big Gear) try
using any overdrive with the tone set to the Low range and a DOD Trash Master or the BOSS
Metal Zone. From the guitar to the Overdrive
and from there to the big distortion.
I used it that way a few years ago when I was
still playing in a band and the sound was really cool and fat.
Hope you´ll find it usefull
(borrow the overdrive before you buy it and experiment first!)

There are some differing opinions here and whilst I reccomended a fuzz pedal I always assume that everyone uses a decent tube amp cos I do, sorry. There are many ways. I will give you some examples.

I use a Strat Vox AC15 and the Z Vex Fuzz Factory. The DS1 in this system is ok. Tubescreamers Bluesbreakers etc are overdrives and (to me) not brutal.

A friend of mine uses a Musicman into a Laney VC50. There are some nasty sounds in the high gain channel. Another uses an Eggle into a Laney LC30 and a RP2000. THere are some very good gain sounds in there. The last one is a PRS into a MArshal JTM60 and GT he borrows my Bluesbreaker for clean boost.

If you are using a LP (not one of my examples) then I found that they roar hrough a MArshall, almost any Marshall.

If you are pulling tubes then remember wattage is not volume and to half the volume you need to reduce the volume by a factor of 10. By a small Marshall or Fender for 'overdrive'.

Pedals also respond differenty with the amp full on. Lastly on the blending pedals thing. Song 2 by Blur (whoo hoo) the gear was this.. Tele Marshall Rat and Shinei fuzz. Hope this helps and happy hunting.

Faggot, I mean Haggot...you must be joking. A digital metalizer? C'mon dude...I have one of those and that is definitely what this guy is looking for. Since it was your first post we'll take it as a joke and disregrd the fact that you may be an asshole for now.

When I heard the false rumor that Rocktron was going out of business, I took my last $700 and hunted down another Voodu-Valve...all because of the incredible distorion. It's the most versatile unit I've ever played through...and the built in HUSH lets me go from dead silence (with a cranked power amp) to a ground shaking open-E power chord. This thing SCREAMS...completely blows away every pedal/amp/POD that I've ever played through.
