The traditional technique for a right handed player is as follows:
The left hand has the continuous motion (the "stirring the pot" motion), normally in a clockwise motion.
The right hand also "stirs the pot" - normally crossing over the left hand. The right hand plays most of the accents.
The hi-hat plays time, mainly half notes (the 2 & 4). The kick drum often plays half notes lightly on the 1 & 3 - but the main use of the kick is to "drop the bomb" which is a term used, meaning to hit main accents (often on the 1)
