Hey man,
Its been a few weeks since you "ordered" your Burr Browns, if you actaully did it, and I was wondering if you ever installed them in your VXP. Didja? Likes?
Peace,
Paul

Aw crap.... damn.... I plumb forgot -- I have been REALLY busy lately and have trouble even remembering to sh*t!!!

Do I still have time? Or has that offer expired....

Bruce

Yep, I think you still can, unless somethings changed... give it a shot today while you still can though... you'll get em by wednesday probably.

hey,

tubedude, where can I get burr brown chips. I am thinking that at $80 to do two channels of my sytek, I might be able to get a totally different sound while retaining my already focused sound.

Is it something that I can buy and install for myself?

Cyan, I'd tell you where to get em, but Sytek does some biasing or something when they change the opamps out, so you need to have them do it for you. Its only like $40 a channel. The Presonus stuff is set up to operate with the Burrs or the Analog Devices chips, so theres not any tweaking to do.
If you still want to do it on your own, then ask Bruce to forward the email I sent him, I dont have all the specifics at easy grasp anymore. I don't recommend it until you at least talk to Sytek 1st.

Okay, what are burr browns, and what do they do?

They're those little velcro things that stick to your socks when you walk through grass sometimes, right?

Yeah, they are called Burr Greens during the summer. :)

They are very nice sounding op-amps for preamplifiers.

LOL Okay, okay. What's an op-amp, and what effect do they have on a pre?

Op-Amp stands for operational amplifier. It's basically what amplifies the signal. FYI: a tube is an op-amp. So when you change opamps in a peice of gear, as when you chnage tubes in something, the sound will change. If you need more info let me know.

So didja get em yet? I would imagine that they might not ship next day air out of the US, so you might be a few days longer than normal. Lemmee know when you get em and how it goes. You should do an AB comparison, record a track or two the way it is, and then record a track afterwards. Maybe I already mentioned that. :) My memory is short as hell.
You will hear a difference though, mainly in bottom frequencies and a little more thickness.
By the way, Presonus has been known to send out the Jensen transformers for that thing on occasion, free of charge. Ahem.

I got them yesterday... haven't opened the box yet -- it's now sitting on the "get to it next chance" shelf..........

I'll let ya know.....

Hmmm... 'bout those Jensen's, never heard of that -- under what situations does Presonus, ahem, send out those transformers?

Bruce

Presonus no longer uses Jensen transformers. I'm not sure exactly why. I have a friend who works for them here in Baton Rouge. I've been meaning to ask him.

Anyone that tells you PreSonus pre's are crap never listened to any of their older units. That's where I would start mods, rather than the Burr ops (IMHO)

Brad,

What units are considered "older"? I've heard more good things than bad about the MP20 (well, except maybe from Fletcher!) And the VXP (which I use) is a single channel version of the MP20 with extra features.

I like the VXP, I can get very nice sounds from it, and it is much smoother-sounding than the Mackie 8-buss pres - although I don't think it's in the same league as say, a Great River, which is on my next year's budget.

It just depends on where you rate good on the scale. That’s kind of like asking me to point out the black and white from shades of gray. If it were only my opinion, I would tell you to take it with a grain of salt… on the other hand I have heard this from various people within the company (not necessarily employed there presently). I’ll try to find a specific time period if you’re really curious.

BTW… I got to play with a d8b for the first time today. I used to like Mackie… now I’m blown away.

I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Presonus getting all the details about the mods a few months back. The op-amps will change the sound considerably more than the transformer will, and the x-former requires desoldering and soldering, which is beyond my skill level. The op-amps are socketed and easy to change, and offer the most dramatic change in tone. The generic transformers in the Presonus don't sound bad.
Heres a link where they changed transformers.

Oh, be sure to check out the "what other people think" link at the bottom of the 1st page. Burr brown op amp listening tests.

How bout it Bruce? Ever get around to it? Probably doesnt seem like much fun to f**k with, I'm sure. Lemme know when ya do!

Naw...still on the "to do next" shelf....

Not sure when I'll get to it -- been too busy too pull it out of the rack...

Maybe next scheduled maintenance downtime....
I'll definitely let you know.....
