The nut on my acoustic fell off the other day. Since I'm deployed, glue is increadibly hard to come by. Would it hurt anything for me to set the nut back in place and just string it up without any glue? Thanks for any help.

It won't hurt anything to use the string tension to hold the nut in place until you get back to have it repaired. It won't be the "optimum" but it's much better than using the wrong type of glue to put it on, only to find that you can't get it off when you want to have it repaired correctly.

You might look for signs of the glue weaking in other places (braces, bridge plates, etc) if you are in a place where temps and humidity are extreme.

PS, thanks for your service.

If you can blag a single drop of Superglue (Cynoacrylate) thats all us luthier types use in any event. All you need is something to hold it in place, it doesn't need or want to be stuck down hard. If it holds in place under tension don't worry about it for now just use a drop of superglue when you can get hold of some.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

And your welcome.

just real quick.

Thanks for your support. A lot of music/arts related sites are pretty hard on us military types. I appreciate your appreciation. I don't say this to draw attention to myself, but just to say thanks.

To glue or not to glue!

Hi,
I recently replaced my corian nuts on my Martins with bone. Because I was never sure if they where finished I never glued them. It has been 2 years and they sound great. I recently bought an expensive Classical made in Spain and discovered they dont use glue, just string tension to hold it in place. I have come to the conclusion that glue acts as a sonic barrier between the nut and the neck. I am leaving them unglued.

Yeah, there are an unfortunate number of assholes in the world. Sorry about them.

Thanks for your service.

Your support from the music/arts community is near unanimous. It's just full of folks who think before they speak (just like the general population). The difference is microphones. Ignorance is best ignored.

My son served over there and is now home safe and whole. Rest assured that you are never far from our hearts. I(we) all hope for your speedy return, safe and whole, to your family and friends. Please accept a personal thank you from me.

You will never hear any audible difference from using glue. The sonic barrier thing is WAY overstated. The nuts on high end classical guitars made in Spain are usually glued. If nothing else it keeps things from shifting when customers restring their guitars.

But, you will not hurt anything by choosing not to glue down your nut. If it seems to sound better to you that's a good enough reason.

Just to echo that those people are assholes. Regardless of the politics behiind it all, you're doing a good job and the world needs guys like you.

I recently replaced my corian nuts ...

I think I will stay with brass, thank you.

I have one more thing to say, here. IMHO, a LOT of the rancor that was unfortunately directed at folks in the military, was really, and rightfully, meant for the former administration. To attempt to tie support for the men and women who put themselves in harm's way for all of us, with blind faith to a dim-witted president and a self-serving administration, is the real insult.

Yes, I support our troops: I support giving them the body armor they need in order to perform their dangerous job in relatively safety.

Yes, I support our troops: I support the United States earning and keeping the respect this is due, and exersizing the restraint that is due from, a super power, thus making their mission truly achievable.

Yes, I support our troops: I support putting them in harm's way with discretion, for truly worthwhile and righteous reasons- which does NOT include protecting only the economic assets of members of the administration.

Yes, I support our troops: I support having a firm focus on the goals and mission, and setting realistic timetables to achieve those goals.

But to politicize the support of our troops is a heinous bastardization of that support. To even suggest that one only qualifies a a patriot if one agrees with the current regime is a bastardization of the very rights and responsibilities granted us by The Constitution of the United States. Of the legion of things Bush Administration has to be ashamed of, that is truly one of the biggest, most shameful of those things.

I support our troops. The Bush Administration can go to hell.

I surely didn't mean to politicize this thread. Thanks for the support, for real. And thanks for the answers about the nut. I almost titled the thread "I busted a nut" but i figured we'd leave it "professional." Thanks guys.

Nate, you certainly were NOT the one to politicize this thread- that was done by either me, or perhaps others here, who used the "A" word. Rest assured, I do appreciate your militiary service, and that of others who served our country in both military and non-military ways- let us not forget that Peace Corps volunteers, many of our political leaders, and many, many others, give greatly of themselves, too. And I am proud of my own, past military service.

And, hey, was that "keeping it professional" crack directed at me? Some guitars have brass nuts...;)
