Well I am now running a pair of studio projects C-1 condensers through my Presonus Firepod, I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40fs which is what im monitoring out of right now.....

I am recording everything myself except drums right now and I am a trained pianist... but I don't know if it is imperative that I get a controller and some soft synths first or if I get my monitors first....is it possible for me to get by in these headphones and make decent recordings as far as demo'ish quality goes until I get my monitors? I am also running a set of Altec Lansing speakers with a sub through my stock card but I doubt they cut it as far as hearing all the nuances goes...

Thanks for your tiiiime!

IMO, as someone who doesn't have monitors, but does have decent speakers and nice headphones, that a decent pair of monitoring headphones will always perform better than pc gaming or multimedia speakers.

that said, nothing is a substitute for quality monitors. i've spent hours mixing on headphones any getting what i thought was a balanced mix, only to bring them to my friends studio (he has a pair of BX5As and Rokkits), to realize my mix quite franky blows.

i'd suggest monitors first, if you can.

Yeah go for some monitors bro.

Whatever you want to buy check online for a lower price and then see if your dealer will match it.

If you want some Rokkit 8's do a search. I posted a link to a good deal just a few weeks ago.

Now, to go off topic, I love Victoria, BC. I was only there for a couple of hours but the areas I walked through were possibly the cleanest most gorgeous city areas I've ever seen.

Can't wait to go back.

Considering what your tossing up with, i'd also vouch for monitors.

personally I'd go with a controller because if you're "po" you're not going to afford monitors that are decient... you'd end up with a self powered, 8" speaker with a reflex tube.... I would rather have a controller to conviently produce tracks and on mixdown test in various sterio systems and cars than spend money on monitors that would need to be upgraded anyway. Often you're better off digging up a 16ohm sterio system at a garage sale...i which is what I replaced my M-Audio SP-5B's with...even after I figure out that the SP-5B's were better with a sock stuffed in the reflex tube.

Monitors changed everything for me. My stuff sounds so much better now than it ever did before. It translates well to every other stereo in my house which I've never been able to do before when going on headphones or computer speakers. If you want monitors on the cheap, eBay is your friend. I picked up a pair of event PS6 monitors (predecessor to the TR6) which were originally $400 for $150. Research a couple sets of monitors you think would fit you well and then be patient on eBay. Good things will come.

Thanks for the input peoples....I'm not all that "po" just a workin' stiff like everyone else. I have been getting some alright recordings with just my headphones, although my ear is still not very trained to this. I have just been boosting a lot of my frequencies as I've found headphones aren't really a viable source and like to sell your ears short.

I can afford to spend about 400-600$ a month on gear. I really can spend about 1500$ if I am going to finance over a period of months but then I probably won't purchase anything else for a bit.

Victoria is a wicked place and I encourage anyone to come over to the island and check it out. I am trying to get an internship at two studios here right now. The only problem is one is not finished being built yet and the guy who owns it is a pretty well known producer/engineer in Canada. I really really really hope he takes me on as his intern/butler/maid/gopher so I can watch him work but I am afraid I am too much of a rookie to be a candidate. I just started taking some classes as well as subscribing to Pro Sound and I ordered a few books off E-bay. I just need to start recording other people now so I can get more experience but I won't do that until I get some more gear and I am confident and happy with my own recordings.

Anywho, cheers!

as well as subscribing to Pro Sound
If you're talking about Pro Sound News, that's an industry stroke mag, plain and simple.

You'd do yourself MUCH more good subscribing to Sound On Sound which is the best written, most trustworthy magazine I know of.

They have been considering Canada in with the US as far as that $60/year subscrpition price is concerned.
