Has anyone else seen/heard of this?

It seems like it should be super easy to make. Any thoughts?

Antares (the auto-tune people) have had a mic modeler out for years.
The fact that it didnt sell and never took off tells you it ISNT "super easy" or works....

A couple of series inductors of appropriate size that will saturate easily should do the trick. A transformer of course works too, but doesn't pass phantom power without some tricks. They might have taken either approach.

Note that such devices are dependent upon level, so they won't do as much on a dynamic mic as a condenser on the same source.

Yeah, from one of the reviews linked they say it's a pair of transformers.

It works just as well to stick a transformer on the output of a preamp where it's easy to saturate and you don't have to worry about phantom power, and it doesn't cost AUD149.

What would the appropriate size be of the seires inductors? Could you build this as a multichannel box or just, say, a two channel/stereo thing?

This might be kind of a cool thing to build. I dunno.

I would go for the external output transformer off your preamp, easier to execute and control. If you want to go series inductor, use any 600:600 audio transformer you like and wire it as two series inductors--that has a pretty big EQ effect depending on the inductance (it will be a first-order RL lowpass filter) in addition to the saturation, it might be too much. Or you can get a transformer with center taps on the primary and secondary and link them, that will pass phantom power, but you have to be sure the transformer is rated to take that. That approach avoids the EQ typically until much higher frequencies, depending on the transformer you select.
