Sound Wave Tamers,

I am putting final plans in for the acoustic treatment for my studio. This forum and others have been invaluable and have spurred me to build my own 703-based absorbers. I have a couple of questions:

1) Can I cut 703 to fit and then reassemble the scraps without concern that scrap-gaps may hinder performance?

2) Is there any functional difference between 2 layers of 2" 703 vs. 1 layer of 4"?

3) I want to make absorber panels that can be flipped over to expose a reflective side. Is it okay to use chipboard backing, knowing it would serve as the reflective side?

I await your prudent guidance oh servers of acousti-truth...

1) - yes
2) - No - just more absorption and lower frequency response.
3) - yes - yu could also use plywood which would act as a panel absorber when reversed.

cheers
John

Woah Nelly!

Do you mean that a single thickness of 4" 703 absorbs more effectively and at a lower frequency as compared to a double thickness of 2" 703 sheets?

How pronounced is this difference?

I've found a local supplier who can sell me 1" and 2" sheets, but unless I want to insulate an airplane hanger, I can't get 4" sheets.

Thanks!

No what I mean is that 2 layers of 2" = 1 layer of 4".
