I am wondering which way is best to bring a project recorded in 96/24 to a cd player. By converson, like in Sound Forge (doing it mathematically) or sending the output of the sound card to another computer that records in 16bits/44.1khz (kind of an analog way) ?

Can you send the output of a sound card to the input of the same sound card to do so?

1. Yes.

2. You could do it that way, but you would lose a lot through the process of DA/AD conversion.

3. Yes, you can. But..... I wouldn't because of the reason stated in answer #2.

What kind of soundcard do you have, and are you using an excellent word clock?

If you are using the garden variety crap semi-pro cards that seem to be popular, and don't have an excellent word clock, I would do it with a SRC application. I don't know how well Sound Forge does it, but Wavelab has a pretty good built in SRC.

If you have a great card with excellent converters, and a VERY stable word clock, I would run back out analog with possibly UV22 dithering applied and record back in at 16/44.

Somehow, I suspect that you are going to have more questions coming. All's I have to say is that asking this vary question means that you are not terribly up on this subject, and have little first hand experience with "mastering". EXPERIMENT!

Good luck.
