Any ideas what the beach boys, maybe even what individuals used on their recordings mic wise? I know everyone rates Pet Sounds(I do too) but I really rate Sunflower(1970) and Surfs Up(1971) hugely sound wise. I think they're incredible for the time :D

Their typical vocal mic setup was a pair of U47's with a Shure 545(!) in the middle between them for the lead vocal.

Mike Love would always be put close up on a U47 for bass parts to get more proximity effect as he has a (very) high baritone/2nd tenor voice really,
and is nowhere near a true bass.

Sometimes the RCA 77DX was also used instead of a U47 for group vocals BTW.

You can read all about this in the book "Wouldn't It Be Nice" that came out recently that focused on the "Pet Sounds" album, along with an overview of their recording career.
