Has anyone had a chance to directly compare the two of these.
I've talked with both api and brent averill regarding the components
used in each of their pres.

API-new 2520 opamp, richenback input transformer, API output
transformer

Brent-vintage 2520 opamp, jensen transformers on both end

The api engineer obviously said the jensen wasn't as good. Brent said
the jensen and richenbach were made from the same tranny and some
people think the jensen has smoother top end.

I realize I could probably not lose in either situation, they'll both
provide that api tone. If I got the BA, I would only get a 2 channel because I wouldn't need all four, but i'm more interested in the quality and sound of each.

Thanks,
Brandon

You can get the richenbach trannys on the Brent Averill pre's. You just have to ask for them.
I have a pair of Audix 35102's re-racked by Brent.
Class A, Discrete, British EQ, Golden!
I'm convinced that anything Brent does is top notch.

I've heard people prefer both trannys, and that the jensens give a smoother response, and the richenbachs giver a punchier tone.
Just depends on what you're loooking for.

As soon as the studio nears compleation, I'm going to order a 6 pack of the 312's from Brent. I'll get 4 with the jensen's and 2 with the richenbach's.

Michael Jones-

I'm glad to hear you've had a good experience with the BA pieces you have. I've only heard a few negative comments about reliability issues with them, but it sounded like they were several years ago.

The API I have in mind would have punchy tone needed for drums and bass and some guitars. I think if I wanted a smoother tone, I would probably plug into the Great River or something similar.

Thanks for the help,
Brandon

The API 3124 is next on my list. I would like two channels of vintage 2520 and two new 2520 channels. I know you can get the 3124 with all four channels with either vintage or new chips so why not half and half. Either tranny is great.

nwsoundman-

what do you say you saw that 3124 in half and give half of it to me. I'll give ya a slap on the ass for it.

C'mon, you know it totally worth it.
