Brent Averill 1073 vs Great Rivers MP-2NV...

Both based on the Neve 1073...
Both Dual channels...
Both re-creations of the original...
Supposedly both sumptuous :)

Big price difference...
Brent Averill - $4500
Great Rivers - $1950

So does anyone know if the Averill is really
worth that much compared to the Great River?
(anyone with REAL experience with either or both?)

Are they close enough in sound quality that the
Great River is a "no brainer" ?

I am looking to add a "Neve-ish" flavor to my
studio.

Thanks,
Bob

Look into Vintech www.vintechaudio.com also.. The X73/X81 looks very nice..I have a 1272 on order 1200.00 2 channels..They have a 4 channel with EQ out or close to out now..More food for thought..Good luck

Don

Theres even a one channel version for half of that. I would assume that either one or the other is in any studio. Having both isnt cost effective. I belive that Ive heard some prefer the GR.

No EQ on the GR. Big difference there.
That's for sure!
The in-line EQ makes all the difference in shaping the sound.

Both are great pre-amps, to be sure. A fine addition to any studio.
$4500 isn't exactly chump change, but if you can afford it, go for the Averills!!
I would.
I have a pair of Brent's Audix 35102's. I don't know if they're very neve-ish, but they have the in-line EQ.
Golden.:)

I agree, definitely not chump change! (bet your Averill's rock)
But man, if you do the math, ($4500 - $1950) you've got
yer self a $2550 eq!... gulp :)

Thats a few more flava's of mic pre's I could buy, or...
(mind starts to wander) MORE MICS! :)

That's a good way to look at it Bob, but if I were doing the math, I'd say that's $2250 for a Neve with eq.;)

i use both the 1073's and an mp2nv and the nv's sound isnt the same as a 1073. i would take the 1073's any day. aint nothin like the real thing baby.

The MP-2NV was not designed to be "Neve-esque"... it was designed to be it's own thing... it just started with a 1073 drawing because you have to start somewhere... but from there, the transformers are different [well the transformers in the Averill and Vintech are different from the original Neve stuff too... but that has more to do with Carnhill not having made the original LO 1166/A output transformer and not really making it exactly as Marinair did than anything else... but that's a tale for another day], the component selection and layout are way different from the "Neve" and "Neve-esque" stuff, the overall noise floor lower, the frequency response extended, yada, yada, yada.

Judge the MP-2NV on it's own merit as it was never intended to be lumped in with the Neve-a-likes... whether or not the MP-2NV suits your sense of aesthetic or fills a purpose within your arsenal of tools is your business... but seriously, don't walk into one thinking you're walking into a "Neve" thing... cuz you ain't.

Peace.

has anyone used both of these units? id like to know how they sound side by side. what is different on the inside of brents 1073 compared to the original 1073? im interested in brents 1073's and i currently own a great river mp2nv. im considering selling the great river and just going for brents 1073's. the price diff is huge and im wondering if it is justified.
