I have a 1.5Ghz pc with 40gig HD and 512 Meg of Ram, OS =XP home. I want to start recording at home!
Our group has currently recorded four cd's ...mostly folk/celtic/bluegrass...

Any suggestions of software and hardware required to get going?
HELP!

$$$?

I'll ask it this time...

What do you want to record exactly and more importantly what is your budget?

Plan to record mostly acoustic instruments, guitars, mandolins, banjo, piano, and of course Vocals...maybe electric bass and a few drum tracks.
I was hoping to stay under $2000.00...or so!

to get going

powertracks or magix audio studio. more tracks than youll ever need. both under 50 bucks.
audiophile or mia sound card.
vtb1 or dmp3 preamps.
sytek preamps if you got the money.
dacs preamps if your rich or great river.
on the other hand a new yamaha mixer at 100 bucks might satisfy you.
and as its acoustic maybe a couple of decent condensor mics like
B1 or apex 430 or if the money stretches a nice beyer ribbon mic.
i'm a great lover of all mics beyer. bit pricier , but never fail to
do the job imho.
also you can build your own mics for acoustic work. look on the net for tapeop DIY microphone.

Thanks so much.
I am told that Protools is the God of software! Expensive though! and..
I have been reading up on Cakewalk Sonar 3 and it looks like a great program. Is this more than I need? I know it is more expensive but I want to make sure I have the tracking and editing abilities to produce a quality product! Is any one more difficult or easy to learn and use?

I am willing to pump a few dollars into this to ensure I have a quality set up!

To everyone: all comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated as I try to make a start!

Thanks

Pro Tools Is NOT the god of software. More like a pedifile preast.

judge for yourself

try a demo of powertracks (29 bucks to buy !) from pgmusic.com
against other software packages that are more expensive and judge for yourself. go ask the same question at the pgmusic.com powertracks forum. lot of seasoned pro's on there use powertracks. you will be surprised the quality you can get with a good soundcard. definitely radio airplay quality if your engineering skills are good. other s to demo i like.
n track, traktion, magix audio studio. multitrackstudio.com
that satchanza on here uses. all superb and cheap imho.
get what works FOR YOU best. not what the marketing tells you.

and runner - some links

http://www.russell-demussel.be/index.html
this is a web site showcasing songs done with pg music software like powertracks etc. click on the links button. lot of talent.
or you can check out some of my songs done using powertracks
and magix audio studio that have had thousands of plays and helped get me my first label deal i just signed.
soundclick.com/bmanning
try...
"Woohoo"
"squirrels"
"limeyrap"
"up in the sky" - a religious song.
"lost little boy" - this songs had a slew of plays.
and many others. by comparison songs like
"the whole of london town is crying" were done in regular mackie equipped studios.
hope this helpsyour decision making.

Congratulations !!!

Manning,

Just saw where you signed your first label deal - way to go man!

Don't forget us little folks - keep providing the good info!

i never forget satch

time will only tell if i can make at least a living.
i turneddown 2 deals, signed one who approached me. .
but i do it for love, i just cant stop writing the darn songs in me.
i just write and produce the best i can. sometimes i fail miserably,
and other times a piece of magic occurs and somehow i get all the engineering right like on "woohoo" that has had lots of plays and other of my songs like "The whole of london town is crying",
or "The wrecker" that went number 1 in guitar rock on soundclick.
I can post right now because i'm taking a nice break to recharge my batteries before producing some new songs.
I'm just trying to save newbies from a lot of heartache ive been through.
