I recently installed some new gear consisting of a BR1600CD recorder, AKG C3000B Condenser Mic, and some M-Audio BX8 monitors. Everything is working, but I had to crank the mic input-limit knob on the BR1600 mic input all the way past the 4 o'clock position to get reasonable mic volume into the recorder. Is this normal?

Since the AKG mic was recommended by Boss, it seemed a little odd to have to adjust the input so close to the limit. The mic is attached directly using the XLR input and the phantom power is turned on. The mic's pre attenuation is turned off. The AKG mic data sheet recommens a load of greater that 1K ohms and the BR1600 input is spec'd at 12.5K ohms.

Should I be looking into a pre amp? or a matching transformer? or just leave it like it is and get on with life :)

I noticed the same thing using a CAD C1 mic. I have couple of mic preamps that I'm going to record with later, I'll let you know the results.

In my experience with the Boss BR1600CD, I turn the input sensor knob all the way up, and then adjust the volume with the input level knob. This is especially true when I'm recording my 12 string, as the pickup is a little weak. Don't know if that's what Boss intended. But it works for me.

DBW...I have the same setup, 'cept BX5's....gotta crank that little knob almost all the way. I set mine JUST below the 'noise' level....more like 5:00 or so, then adjust the input level to get it right. I have just learned that that is the way it is...nothin you can do about it unless outboard gear is used. I will be curious to hear the results with the pre-amp.
