Hey Everybody,

I consistantly record my drums the same way, because it's the only way I know how.

Input 6 : SM58 or SM57 pointing inside the Bass Drum cutaway hole
Input 7 : SM57 2" overtop snare drum at 45 degree angle
Input 8 : B-1 Condnesor mic as a over head, about 5 feet in the air in from of the kit

This seems to work good. Problem is, I have to do alot of compression and a little reverb to make them sound a little more pro and a little less dry and boring. I then always mix those 3 tracks down to track 15/16 so I thin have 6 + 7 + 8 to play with again.

Does anybody have any tips to improve this or found a COSM effect or loop effect they particualarily liked ?

How does everyone else do their drum tracks on their BR machines ?

I basically use all the inputs, using 57's, d112 kick, shure ksm's for overheads, so I have all 8 inputs going. I dont know that that way is better, but i have the mic's so i figure why not use them right.

one thing i have done to save time(bouncng) is to really use the user effect patches as a first round of EQing and compressing. I use the basic full drumkit patch and just tweak it to fit what drum set and room i am recording in, that way the next time i record(cause i save the patch), as long as the levels are similar i dont have to spend so much time getting a starting point.

I know it is probably really basic information, but in case you never thought of it. I have also started messing around with the reverb settings. If you really mess with the delay and reverb times of the reverb you can get a reallly cool smack, 80's style if you tweak it right, and put a little doubling effect on the snare seems to really bring it to life.

yep

Cool.... good info....

What KSM's do you use ?

Also, not in front of my machine right now,
what preset is that you are using ?

I just use the basic 8 input preset that came already on the machine to be used for the "total drum kit". Then i tweak each input settings starting with the "low cut", then compression then the eq, then the eq level. these are all within this patch, within each input. then i save it and make it mine. it always there to start, then you can go to your loop effects, (eq, compression, reverbs) to keep sweetening your sound as you need it.

im using 2 ksm-27's for overheads. i bought them for vocals, but am learning to get a good sound out of them as overhead drum mics, still not there yet, but they will sound good once i kow which filters to use on it.

good luck
