Hey,
Just wondering if anyone has used the Boss BR-532,
and if so, is it possible to just hook it up to your computer(i have an imac 500)through its line out to the mic jack, and record it onto the computer. Instead of having to buy a smart media drive, and more memory cards. Probably a stupid question, but it just seems like the BR-532 is a more affordable and easier way to mix tracks than
a software program.(Ive tried a few)But once they are mixed I want to get them on my computer to burn CD's.Hope this makes sense to someone with an answer. Thanks.

KOS,

The best way I can explain the 532 is that it is a great sounding portastudio. Just as simple (almost) as a tape 4-track, just updated for current times. In that respect it's good for compiling and creating song ideas or practicing. If you are looking for much more you'll most likely want to go another route.

If simple is your way of doing things, then you have several options for connecting your 532 to your mac.

1) Spent the $30 and get a USB SmartMedia reader. Boss now has software that will allow the user to convert and tracks from any song into aif or wav files. So you can take the recording process as far as you want to and then copy it over to your mac to finish up.

2) Spent more than $30 and get a USB to S/PDIF digital audio converter for your mac. Mix down on the 532 and record it on the mac. Still all digital.

3) Spend $3 for a stereo RCA to 1/8in. minijack cable. Does same as above but analog.

The most flexible route is to do number 1. If you go that route you will also be able to back up your recordings to your mac. That means you only need one memory card. When it's full back it up, erase it, re-use it. Lastly, 128mb SmartMedia cards can be found online for as cheap as $65. I would suggest getting one of these for your larger projects.

Hope this helps.
