boxy vocals

wats good.. im have trouble getting a good recording with my studio set up.. its my spare bedroom in my apartment i started out by just recording in the open but got too much reflection. then i did some research sound treated the room light weight.. i got some studio foam which worked out great for killing reflection.. i was still getting a little bit of reverb from the uncovered areas so i moved the mic into the closet.. its working great for a dry recording but it sounds real boxy.. any info on an alternative would be most appreciated.. also i hear a lot of people cover every wall with a duvet.. would that work to kill the sound in the whole room and give me a clear dry recording?

First, what is your setup? If you feel like your vocals are "boxy" maybe a preamp will help warm them up.

Hang a sleeping bag on 2 mic stands in a V-arrangement. Put mic well into the V pointing out and sing into the V. This reduces most of the high frequency sounds from getting into the room in the first place. Hang another bag behind you as you sing, to catch any reflections that do occur from coming into the front of the mic. It helps my vocals tremendously in my small untreated room.

Sound treatment is the key.

You probably have no real bass trapping. Look up threads on this site that discuss something called Owens Corning 703. I'll leave it to you to do the searches.

I tried to post the making of some treatment on a blog... should get you thinking. Dig the stuff behind the drums. That's the kind of treatment you need, not foam, as that takes out the treble and leaves all the bass you DON'T want.
