Bought some used Sennheiser shotgun mics... now what.

I walked into a great deal last weekend; a Sennheiser K3-U with ME80 Hypercardioid capsule + a Sennheiser K6P with (what appears to be a) ME64 Cardioid capsule, together for €100 ($130) + stamps. They're worth around 3x that.

But this gear is mainly for going out into the woods and record nature. Has anyone here found a use for them in a studio setting?
 
My K3-U sees a lot of work on the snare drum Chris!

Just using the one that came with it. I'll check to see which one that is Chris. -- Got mine for $20. :cool:

GC didn't know what it was for you have to look into the battery compartment to see that it's a Sennheiser. ;)

wow. That reminds me of my Gibson RD Artist that my sister found at a yard sale for $80. They go for about 2 grand on ebay these days.
 
I have 5 x K3U bodies and 3, ME80, 3 ME40 and 2 ME20 capsules. The ME80 is a semi shotgun, shorter than a true shotgun, has great side and rear rejection. The ME40 is more like a normal cardioid condenser, and the ME20 is omni.

These are one of my favourite mics, both the ME80 and ME40 work fine in the studio for acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo (did I say that) violin. I use the ME80 for spoken word and even vocal tracks, the ME40 make great drum overheads and hi-hat mics. You can use the ME80's as overheads just put them slightly higher. I also have used the ME80's as live mics for panel discussion events. The ME80 is used a lot by TV studios on outside broadcasts. The K3U is also very quiet.

If you search the net there are always capsules coming up second hand for the K3U.

Just to throw in another weird use for hyper cardioid/super cardioid in a studio, quite a few voice over artists ask for them to use the proximity effect to exaggerate the bass. When your hear that typical movie trailer voice ("Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the HR forums.....") it's often a result of misusing a hypercardioid in a voice over booth.

Whether you can find a musical use for the same thing, who knows!

Indeed, postage, no tax at all.

Many thanks for all that great input on that K3U, I'll run some tests over the weekend, see how I like it. Could you think of a mic you would campare it too?

Nobody knows the K6P then? After a quick browse it appears to be more expensive then the K3U.

I don't know -- kinda in a class by itself compared to my other SDCs.
