I've collected about 10 mics within 1 year and 2 preamps. Do I have a problem here? Started with a couple of Samson mics from bestbuy. My latest is a shure beta 87a.

It depends, mofat.
If you're just doing VO work then yeah, you probably have a problem with your room or something.

I have about 20-30 mics but I use different ones for different things.
I never really buy mics because they'll be better than the last. I just want them to be better suited to different applications.

When buying mics now I always try to aim at something that won't be replaced or upgraded.

For example, I won't buy an £80 pencil condenser. I'll just get the sm81s or oktavas or something.
I know there are better mics out there, but those ones are still commonplace in studios..

Funny you should post this! I just got via USPS yesterday two new-to-me mics. The discontinued EV Cardinal Condenser and EV Raven Dynamic. They both sound fantastic, each with a very unique kind of sound. BUT that said, recently I went through the mics I already own doing vocal tests. I found that I liked what I heard on them all, just all slightly different "colors of the palette". Funny enough I found I liked how I sounded through my two cheapest mics (Blue Spark Condenser & SM58!!) BUT now with these new ones, I really really love the Cardinal. It has this airy quality and warmth none of the others have AND I only paid $70 for it used!

I won't be going out to spend $$$$ on a Neumann anytime soon, so this one will do!

Funnilly enough, I've never bought a microphone or any piece of equipment thinking it will make me sound better. There is no technology that has yet managed that ! I'm a lost cause. :D

I've bought an NTK and a Sputnik in 5 years, about $1000. Earth shattering difference compared to my SM58.

Welcome to the mew world of "Apps", where there is an "EASY " button for everything.....except talent......yet.

No. It doesn't happen to me because I know the mics I bought are capable even if I'm not.

All I know is...why can't we start from a Samson starter Mic and just go for the high end Neumann.....if u put all ur Mics in between u coulda gotten 1... And no I don't sound any better .
