Master Baiter
I got my shipment from 8th street yesterday, including a SP B1 and 2 CAD GXL2200's (to rip apart and destroy by ignorant modification - but what the hell for $50 apiece. BTW they have a 100Hz/6db rolloff switch not noted in the specs.) I already have a Behringer B1 and MXLv67, so thought I would try a comparison.

Signal chain: mic -- audiobuddy -- Dman PCI card. No EQ, no effects. The mic is at eye level, pointed 45 degrees down. Voice is about one foot away, singing straight ahead.

The guitar was mic'd with MXL603.

1st 2 verses CAD
2nd 2 verses Behringer
3rd 2 verses SP
4th 2 verses MXL

Disclaimer - I'm not a singer, guitar player or recording engineer. I don't have a studio. No nasty comments please.

The only real difference I could tell was the SP was flatter, without the high freq bump that the others have. Of course the mp3 format detracts also. They all sounded reasonable to my ignorant ears.

COOL!
I really appreciate when folks take the time to do these kinds of things. I know some folks really balk about the "testing" and all...it may not be scientific but it sure gives one an idea of one mic's tonal characteristics over another's.

I thought it all sounded pretty good.....and came to the same conclusion as you based on your recording. Of course, I agree, theres no telling what kind of masking MP3 might create and I'm listening on computer speakrs.

Thanks for taking the time, man!

thanks!

Yes, I like hearing this type of comparison, too.

I'm curious about the similarity between the two CAD's. Have you had a chance to test them side by side?

Hey, your name is 4 letters in a row backwards on the keyboard, but I suppose you already know that.:)

I hadn't thought of comparing the 2 mics (one is still unopened in the box), but I'll give a listen. Good idea. I doubt if my ears will be able to detect any but the most gross of differences, but if I can hear any difference I'll let you know.

Very cool. I think I like the marshal the most. The marshal seems to lack body, but a little bit of low end eq can fix that! Really cool to hear this comparison...

Nice idea! Nice song as well...

Well... I didn't care much for the CAD. It sounded thinner then the others, and I think it was a tiny bit distorted, but then, I could be wrong.
The SP and the MXL were the definitly better then the other 2. Both had a different flavour, and the proximity effect on the MXL was more noticeable.
All on all, I also think that all mics are usable (although personaly, I wouldn't buy the CAD).

Real nice of you to do that!

Yeah, I figured it was better than "wert".

BUDAT-PSHHH!

I tried the two CADs against each other - I couldn't tell any difference audibly, but my ears aren't that great.

This led me to try a frequency analysis of the two. Although the technique left a lot to be desired, I could see no differences.

I tried a frequency analysis of several of the mics I used in the song (actually, all except the Behringer B1) which I'll post as a separate thread, as I need some advice on how to proceed.

Thanks for your input - I enjoyed doing it.

at last!

This is sooo cool, and much appreciated.

It's the first recording i've heard of the Studio Projects B1. I think it's my favourite of the four mics in this demo. I also liked the CAD, though it's not one of the trendy mics you read so much about in this forum.

I didn't care for the Behringer or the V67. (Keep in mind that i'm a total newbie at "listening" to different mics. Also my speakers aren't the greatest. :) )

Just when i'd pretty much decided to get the MXL2003, SP comes come out with the B1 for just over half the price!

Has anyone out there done a comparison between the MXL2003 (aka V93) and the new SP B1?

Be seeing you.
