SE-50
To cover all the ins and outs of the SE-50 would take up an entire book...but when I was using mine here are the main things I came away with:
For its time it did a pretty good guitar distortion...but by now modeling and all has made the distortions sound "processed".
The reverbs it did were and are very cool and very usable if you are doing multiple tracks and need a room/hall/plate for rimshots, handclaps, cymblas, guitars etc. Not amazing, but usable depending on the situation. You really have to use your ears.
The choruses are great...no doubt about that.
The delays also great, very usable and having multi-taps is a rare treat and occasionally finds great use in a recording.
The phase shifting is great..and while not a dead ringer for a certain pedal, certianly usable.
I unfortunatley didnt explore the vocoder to much. I do rock and in rock there isnt much call for it. But as an experiment I messed with it a few times and found it serviceable. I seem to recall you had to give the input a healthy signal or it didnt work so good. It wasnt very pronounced sounding. I think we needed to enhance the signal coming out. It was ok, but just needed a little help. But we felt it was a nice bonus to have a vocoder at all in such a inexpensive and small box.
I sold my SE-50 to a girl in the south after having used it extensively for about 4 years. It was a good experience and I know she is probably getting lots of use out of it. I would recomend the SE-70 as well, that and the SE-50 really pack alot of power in a small space. I wish Boss had continued even further in that direction...the latest half rack thing by them isnt as flexible and it isnt cheap, either. Oh well, maybe next time they'll do better.
