Boss RC20 recording sequence

Hi everyone, maybe someone can help me here.
I have some problems when I try to record a phrase on my rc20 unit. Happens that if I set the tempo with the right pedal there's an amount of time that the unit isn't recording and then I don't understand when do i have to stop it, because when I do it the quantize tool destroys the phrase.
If I'm playing a 4/4, When is the time to start and stop?
a. start at 3 and stop at 4?
b. start at 3 1/2 and stop at 4 1/2?

I have an RC50 and I completely ignore the tempo thing.... in fact, the RC50 has a tempo pedal and I deliberately reprogram it to be "Stop All" because to accidentally hit it live when I'm trying to hit something else completely destroys the phrase as it changes the tempo on it...

I have not yet found a use for the tempo setting.

I know it's not the question you're asking.... but just sayin'....
