Addled but happy
I've been using a few separate Boss pedals, and I while I like the sound and durability, I've read some good reviews on the Boss multi-effects guitar pedals, such as the ME-33 and the GT-6.

I'm not a professional and have no illusions of greatness, nor do I want to spend $10,000 on a hobby. I just like to play when I can, with friends or on my own, and record for my own enjoyment. I don't gig anymore. (It gives me a headache!)

So, for 250-400, are these things any good?

the GT-6 ROCKS.....it is unbelievable....whenever i see one in a store i have to plug in and play with it........

this guy used the GT-6 exclusively to record his CD......look to the left of the page and click on "here" to get an mp3......

I haven't tried the GT-6 but I have a GT-5 that I do not use much but can still tell you something about.

The GT-5 has lots of choices when it comes to effects/sounds which can be good or bad depending on your patience level. The quality of the sound is NOT as good as separate stomp boxes but the GT-6 is 24bit and a newer design where mine I believe is 20bit so there maybe an improvement on the sound quality aspect.

The GT-6 also has knobs instead of buttons which would make a big difference for me (hate pushing buttons and scrolling though menus) even if it is purely on a psychological basis.

The main problem with these multieffects units is that Boss has a bad habit of setting presets solely for the use of impressing potential buyer in the store. Unfortunately the same presets are sort of "hyper-real" and get annoying pretty quickly. You will be spending lots of extra time building your own sounds and pretty much never using the factory presets. However the sounds are quite good once you get them.

They are economical, I think, and worth the money if you have the time and patience to play around with it. They are also quite durable although the knobs on the GT-6 may be vunerable to damage if you do decide to start gigging again.... which of course you will :)

Hope that helps.
