I'm thinking about purchasing a Boss DR-770 drum machine.

I use ADAT as a recording medium(I don't use computer software).

Can someone tell me how I would realistic sounding drums with the Boss DR-770, without sampling it into a computer?

Do I just push the buttons as if I'm drumming. Can it do loops, if so, how to I do fills and pauses?

Don't use the 770 as I own the Boss DR202. Similar functions
with pre-programmed drumkits and the ability to "Step and Real"
record your own user beatz! The 202 allows for real-time processing of decay, resonance, panning, etc of individual percussion instruments so that one can try and "tailor" the percussive sounds! Both are good machines and a few folks here
give the 707 it's props.
But alas, drum-machines will always have that "canned drums" sound as there ain't nuthin like having your own actual kit!
A/B/C it vs. other machines and determine what suits you best!

Yo MCHEETAH: A very fast cat -- the fastest!

I have the 770 drum machine. With most drum machines you press the "buttons" when you are adding a lick here and there, rim shot, tom, cymbal, etc.

With the 770 you get good sounds and many pre sets have an A/B roll which moves from one beat to the same beat usually jazzed up or enhanced. All very nice.

Now, if you want to "play the drums with the 770 or most other drum boxes, you can program the entire song just the way you want it -- that takes more time but I've programmed on the Yam drum box and the SR-16; depends what you need to do.

I don't know much about the box double Q mentioned but it sounds good. However, I do think the Boss 770 [they make a couple of these which have different patches] is a good buy and the samples are very good.

But, try, look, listen, and get what works best for you. I would say that drum machine technology is a bit behind the digital multitracks but not for long.
:D :D :p

Do you guys know if you can pan on these things - take 1 tom move it left, the other move it right, etc... and record stereo?

I've checked a friends out and it's as good as you're gonna get for that price.
I think that category of machine is kind of going to the wayside because the computer stuff is more versatile, sounds better and if you already have a decent computer cheaper.
The 770 has a foot trigger input that might make it useful in a live setting that might be a plus.

its a good machine, great for the price. i have one... i've made beats on it that sound like my mpc tracks.. its easy to work with...

All My songs were done with it....

Well the bass drum and snare at least... the rest of the cymbals and hi hats are live...

Man I must be boring everyone with these songs... but whenever I see a question like this that involves something I've used, I think it's best to post a sample....

Anyways.. as far as drum machines go, I think it;s pretty realistic.. although, it won't replace a real kit
