Picked one of these up at a pawn shop for 20 bucks. I tested it (by turning it up until it squashed the tone) and worst case scenario I could trade it off, if I couldn't use it.

Anyone ever used one of these for live performances? for recording?

I have'nt used one of those particular boxes but I do like a compressed clean sound on some stuff. For example, The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge.

Can't comment on the CS3 but I have it's predecessor CS2 and it's over 20 years old, still going and I have used it live for years plus recorded with it.You either like 'em or you don't.

I was considering getting one of them, mainly for evening out guitar sound on my home recordings (I can't afford a rack compressor) but after trying it out I decided to go for the Marshall ED-1 instead, which I'm reasonably happy with. you do have to play around with the settings quite a bit to find the right ones though.

Hi

I have a CS-3 but I' not using it anymore. Start with the attack to the maximum and the sustain to the minimum and see what sound you have. Depending on the application, I would increase the sustain or decrease the attack a bit but not much.

/Jack Real.

I use the CS-3 for all live stuff, mainly for the increased sustain on electric guitar. It's also useful on acoustic to level out your strumming. The key is finding the right Attack setting. I use 3 o'clock for electric, and 9 for acoustic. I'm sure there are better compresser pedals but the CS-3 works fine for me. It did take me a while to learn how to use it, though.

Compression is best used to enhance a sound, not overwhelm it.When you're almost there,it may be compression you're lacking.
I'm a Dynacomp user and I like it for chicken picken sounds or for a nice attack on the strings.Depending on the guitar you can get some huge sustain out of them too.
If your amp is cranked all the way up with hot pickups the compressor may not actually be doing much.
