Hi,
I'm looking for advice about purchasing a portable 8 track recorder, and have narrowed down my search to either the Zoom R16 or the Boss BR800.
My requirements are these:
1. Ability to simultaneously record at least to 4 tracks at once
2. Ability to record to minimum of 8 tracks
3. Stereo Line input recording capability
4. PC AND Mac compatible
5. SD / SDHC card recording
6. Can run on batteries
7. Prefer that record format is .WAV or .MP3
8. External mics. on unit
Here are the advantages and disadvantages of the above units, from my point-of-view
Boss BR800
2. Records only in proprietary Boss format - have to use downloadable converter to convert to .WAV files
3. I cannot stand Boss sounds
2. Lots of sounds
3. Cubase LE software only accommodates up to 8 tracks
Zoom R16
2. Comes with Mac compatible software
In addition to wanting advice on the above, I have some questions for those of you who have either one of the above units, as I have no experience with them. Please forgive any questions which may be obvious.
QUESTIONS
1. Will the Mac or GarageBand on the Mac 'detect' or be able to work with the Zoom R16 in the same way that it works with the Cubase software that comes bundled with the Zoom R16?
2. If it would be better for me to buy a different piece of software for use with the Zoom, would it simply be a case of buying Cubase, or Logic - i.e., would the Mac / software 'detect' or be able to work with the Zoom
3. Are there any problems with converting the Boss BR800's files to .WAV format, particularly on the Mac?
4. Is it possible with both the Zoom R16 and the Boss BR800 to export individual files for back-up OR to import into multitrack software, or do the units only export to a mixed down stereo track?
5. Does the Zoom R16 have any bounce capability, or equivalent (such as virtual tracks)?
Thanks very much for any replies.
